What’s the story?

The story begins in the year 1983, in the city of Tibet. A dying old man is seen handing a letter to a girl, as he promises to make her a human.
The scene shifts to Tokyo in 1987. Yakumo Fujii is in a hurry to head to his workplace, when he comes across a dirty girl with torn clothes, holding up a sign for a lift.
Yakumo realizes that she wants to go to the same place he was going, and decides to give her a lift. As he turns around, he notices a man attempting to flee with the girls’ bag. He intervenes and manages to get her bag back but the man manages to run away with the girl’s staff. The girl thanks him, and they head to his workplace, Takeda’s bar.
The girl introduces herself as Pai and claims to be Chinese. Pai bursts into tears when she learns Yakumo's name and hands him a letter from his father, a scientist who went missing on an expedition. She claims to have been searching for Yakumo for the past four years.
Pai presents Yakumo a skull, claiming that it belongs to his late father. Yakumo is concerned, but he continues reading the note left for him by his late father. In it, he claims that Pai nursed him back to health when he was on the point of death. He asks Yakumo to assist Pai, who is actually the last descendent of a magical race of eternal beings.
His father had asked Yakumo to accompany Pai to Hong Kong to seek assistance from a renowned scientist in order to fulfill Pai's wish to become a human.
Yakumo, who had always felt robbed because of his fathers absence for the majority of his life, and even after his death, he is urging his son to help someone else.
Meanwhile, the burglar is seen tampering with Pai's cane. He inadvertently breaks open the top, and from it comes out a horrible beast. The word of the beast spreads around the television, with Yakumo and Pai becoming aware of it as well.
Pai refers to the monster as Takuhi and asks Yakumo to assist her in locating it.
As the two head out to search for the beast, they are found first and attacked by the man-faced avian beast. Pai pleads for the Takuhi to recognise her, but he appears to be in a trance and knocks the two off their scooter.
When the beast heads for Yakumo, Pai stands in his way in an attempt to stop him, but Yakumo pushes her out of the way, getting fatally wounded in the process.
Pai activates her third eye and orders Yakumo not to die. A rush of energy envelops Yakumo and Takuhi, healing Yakumo and restoring Takuhi's senses.
Some time later, Yakumo awakens to see a sleepy Pai resting her head on his lap. He realizes that Pai saved his life and brought him back from the brink of death.
Yakumo assures Pai that in exchange for saving his life, he will take her to Hong Kong and help her in getting her wish to become a human. This makes Pai extremely happy and she embraces Yakumo.
What awaits the two on their quest to discover a way for Pai to become human?
