Shoot for The Star!

Toshihiko Tanaka has just started his first year at Kakegawa High School at the start of Shoot!. When all of the freshmen were looking to join some after-school activity clubs, Toshi already knew what he wanted to do. His goal was Kakegawa High’s famous soccer club.
Even though the club was newly formed, Kakegawa High soccer team had made it to the quarterfinal in the national tournament the year before. This year, the club was looking for new members and a club manager.
Toshi went to the club room and asked to join right after class ended. However, he was greeted coldly by the soccer team’s vice-captain Atsushi Kamiya. He told Toshi that there was no practice that day and assigned him to do laundry.
While doing the huge pile of dirty laundry, Toshi got frustrated and threw the clothes to the ground, accidently splashing water onto Kazumi Endo. She was a pretty girl with long hair but dressed like a delinquent. Kazumi immediately snapped at Toshi and asked him to apologize.
However, as she realized Toshi was a member of the soccer club, Kazumi changed her tone and asked Toshi if she could become the club manager. Toshi didn’t even have time to answer when her delinquent friends showed up. They intimidated Toshi and told him to reject Kazumi’s offer of becoming the soccer club’s manager.
After Kazumi and her gang had left for the arcade, Toshi finished his chore and went home. Feeling dejected, Toshi was surprised when he met with his friends from junior high school.
Kazuhiro Hiramatsu and Kenji Shiraishi were really close with Toshi when they played soccer together in junior high. However, Kazuhiro stopped playing soccer to focus on studying and Kenji stopped due to an unknown incident in the past. Out of the three, only Toshi seemed to remain passionate about the soccer team, even though they all enrolled in the same high school.
Toshi’s days continued with him doing chores for the upper-class men. He asked to join their practice but vice-captain Kamiya would always refuse and told Toshi to do basic lap-run instead.
It was then revealed that Toshi, Kazuhiro and Kenji went to watch Kakegawa High played in the national tournament. They all witnessed the moment that Kakegawa High won against the favorite Fujita High to qualify for the quarterfinal. Toshi idolized Yoshiharu Kubo of the Kakegawa team and was fascinated by his skillful long-shoot that led the team to victory. He aimed to join Kakegawa High soccer team in order to play soccer with his idol.
Toshi tried to practice alone after everyone had left and didn’t know that Kazumi was watching. She was impressed by his skill as Toshi made an impressive move that kicked the ball flying across the field. Kazumi then lifted Toshi’s student ID and went to his house with an excuse to give the ID back.
Toshi’s family thought Kazumi was his girlfriend and showed her a lot of photo albums from when Toshi was little. As they got to know each other, Toshi also discovered that even though Kazumi wanted to become the soccer team’s manager, she didn’t even know any of the general positions. For a moment, Toshi thought she was kind of cute......
When Kazumi saw a photo album from when Toshi used to play soccer with his two best friends, she said that Toshi looked so cheerful back then. The three young boys were always smiling in the photos they took together. Toshi remembered the past when their team made it to the semifinal of junior high school tournament.
After that, Kazumi got called out by her delinquent friends and went home with them. As she was leaving, Kazumi carried a bag full of books that she secretly got from Toshi’s room. They were all about soccer.
It seems like a rocky start for Toshihiko at the new soccer club. Will he be able to fit in? How will Kazumi and Toshihiko’s friendship grow? Read on to find out!
