Joujuu Senjin!! Mushibugyo is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiroshi Fukuda.

The series was serialized in Shogakukan’s weekly Shounen Super from January 2011 to September 2017. It’s chapters are compiled and collected into 32 separate volumes. This series is the remake of the original ‘Mushibugyo’ manga, which was serialized from August 2009 to September 2010.

An anime television series adapted by Seven Arcs Pictures was released in 2013, consisting of 26 episodes. An OVA was also released.

The story takes place in the 16th year of the Kyouhou Era, in the innermost village in Tsugaru-Han.

A young boy named Jinbei Tsukishima greets the sun in a roaring voice and starts his morning training, waking the whole village in the process.

Elsewhere in the village, a man named Matsunohara Kotari is looking for Genjuurou Tsukishima, Jinbei’s father and the master of the local dojo.

He enters the dojo and finds Jinbei training with Genjuurou, more like being smacked around by him. Without moving an inch, Genjuurou deflects Jinbei’s every move and counters with a blow strong enough to send Jinbei flying across the room.

Matsunohara finally introduces himself and reveals that he has been sent by the government to recruit Genjuurou for a special mission. He refuses, revealing that the reason he wasn’t moving during the training was because he lost his leg during a mission and would only be a burden to them.

Matsuno understands and takes his leave. But just as his about to exit the dojo, Jinbei stops him and volunteers to come as a substitute for his father. Without hearing his answer, everyone at the dojo starts celebrating.

Matsuno feels that the mission might be too much for a boy like Jinbei, so later that night, he tries to sneak out of the village. Just as he leaves the dojo, he sees Jinbei training in the middle of the night.

Matsuno asks him about his motivation to train, upon hearing which his eyes gets saddened as he replies “I was the one who took my dad’s leg”.

8 years ago, Genjuurou took Jinbei on a mission to accompany the Shogun and his son. But during that mission, Jinbei and the Shoguns son decided to wander around the forest and unfortunately came across a very dangerous monster. The monster charged at them and Jinbei stood there, frozen in fear.

At the very last moment, Genjuurou arrived and slashed the monster in two, saving them both. The shogun was angry at Jinbei for putting his son in danger, so he order his guards to imprison him. To save his son, Genjuurou offered to take his punishment upon himself and sacrificed his own leg.

Matsuno finally realizes his potential and decides to recruit him afterall.

The next day, he says his goodbyes and heads out with Matsuno. Just as they enter the forest, a giant bear shows up and attacks them. Motivated to carry out his duty, Jinbei easily takes down the bear without drawing his sword.

Back home, Genjuurou finally realizes that he never asked Matsuno about the type of mission for which he came.

Just what kind of duty will he carry out? And what kind of people will he meet there?
