【Mashle: Magic and Muscles】 Adventure x Comic Fantasy! A magical series with great Setting and Humor!!

Mashle: Magic and Muscles is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Komoto.

The manga series is being serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shounen Jump magazine since January 2020. As of December 2021, 9 separate volumes have been released. As of August 2021, the manga had over 2.1 million copies in circulation. The series was nominated for the 6th Next Manga Award in 2020, where it placed 11th out of the 50 nominees.

An anime television series is yet to be announced.

The story kicks off with Mash Burnedead, the protagonist, working out in the forest. He finishes his daily workout and heads home while eating a cream muffin.

At home, his father, Regro Burnedead, is waiting for him. He returns home, but due to his clumsy and forgetful personality, instead of opening the door he rips it right off the hinges, causing Regro to scream in anger.

Mash apologizes right away for his error, and Regro forgives him because of his amenable personality. Mash tries to correct his error by putting the door back in the frame, but he ends up shattering it much more, causing Regro to scream once more. Regro inquires about the training, reasoning that since Mash was born without magic, the only choice he has is to train his body.

As he walks out on an errand, Regro warns Mash not to go into the city. Mash sees an ad for a big deal on muffins and can't stop himself from going into the city.

Mash has his head covered by a hood, but while buying muffins, a gush of wind blows away the hood and reveals his face to the shop owner, who is shocked to see that Mash doesn’t have a wizards mark on his face. Every body around Mash starts staring at him in suspicion.

Brad Coleman, a police officer, who is reading a newspaper in his office while looking after a caged criminal, gets a call stating that a young man without a mark has shown up in the city. He immediately heads after him.

Brad arrives at the market and finds Mash apologizing to a police officer for accidently squishing his muffin against his uniform, but before Brad can apprehend Nash, Regro appears, fleeing with Mash on his back.

They reach home where Regro is extremely angry with Mash for disobeying him. Mash again sincerely apologizes and as for his punishment, Regro sends him out to train. As Regro heads out, Brad and his men break into the house, asking Regro about Mash.

Mash returns home after completing his training in a matter of minutes. As he prepares to open the door, he overhears Brad remark that the reason this country has thrived in magic is because they have eradicated every magicless gene from the gene pool, and to keep things that way, they must murder Mash.

Regro gets a flashback to his childhood, when he was teased and shunned by his family because of his lack of magical ability. He was about to commit suicide when he came across a newborn Mash laying on a bridge, and the instant he laid eyes on him, he realised that Mash needed him, and it gave him a reason to live.

In a desperate attempt to save Mash, Regro screams at Mash to run away, hoping that his voice reaches him, but instead of running away, Mash comes crashing through the door and laying waste to one of the henchmen. The officer from earlier is also present, but before he says anything, Mash grabs him and slaps him unconscious.

Regro asks Mash why he didn’t run away, to which Mash replies “Because we're family. You're all I've got. Sorry for being stubborn, pops. But since I'm here, I might as well send you guys to hell”.

Hearing this, Brad laughs as a normal human can never beat a mage. To demonstrate his power, Brad casts “Nalcompas” an extremely powerful spell able to kill a dragon, but Mash simply slaps the attack away, leaving everyone in utter confusion.

Seeing his incredible strength, Brad loses all hope for victory. He then tells Mash that if they want to avoid any other officer coming after them, Mash will have to join the magic academy and become the Divine Visionary, a member chosen by God. The tile comes with a prize of 1 billion Lond and that is what Brad is after.

Against Regro’s wishes, Mash accepts the offer, telling Regro that “ if the world won’t allow us to live, then I will just have to crush it with my fists”.
