The story of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle is a manga series written and illustrated by the famous manga artist group Clamp. The story of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle unfolds in the same fictional universe as Clamp’s other manga series, most notably “xxxHolic”. The main protagonists of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle are also those that appear in Clamp’s other beloved series “Cardcaptor Sakura”.
The group is well-known for their cross-referencing and storytelling that lead to characters being re-used in several different ways. For Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, the manga was created as a way to connect all of Clamp’s previous works. From May 2003 to October 2009, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle was serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine by Kodansha, with a total of 28 volumes. It has been well received by both Japanese and English readers, and reached high positions on various best-seller lists. A sequel titled “Tsubasa: WoRLD CHRoNiCLE” started serialization in 2014 that would be linked to “xxxHolic Rei”.
The manga was later adapted into a two-season anime series titled Tsubasa Chronicle, animated by Bee Train, which aired 52 episodes during 2005 and 2006. In between the two seasons, Production I.G released an interlude film titled “Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle the Movie: The Princess in the Birdcage Kingdom”, as well as five OVAs which acted as a sequel to the second season. The series also inspired various video games and drama CDs.

The Beginning of the World!

The story of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle started with the main protagonist Syaoran, who just returned home after a long time researching the Ruins of the East. Syaoran came to this country – Clow Kingdom, with his father a long time ago, in search of the ruins. They were trying to uncover the past of their own kingdom. When his father passed away, Syaoran carried on his father’s dream and became an archeologist.
He looked at his father’s photograph and said that his theories were correct and all the ruins were buried under the sand.
Then, a young girl came to the door. As the cloak fell off, it was princess Sakura. She jumped up and hug Syaoran tight, saying that he had to call her by name instead of calling her “princess”.
Sakura said she sneaked out to meet Syaoran alone and that her brother – the current king didn’t approve of this. However, Sakura kept coming to see Syaoran because he was her precious childhood friend. Sakura and Syaoran met 7 years ago when Syaoran and his father, a renowned archeologist, arrived in Clow Kingdom. When Syaoran’s father passed away, he refused to live in the castle amongst the royal family.
Sakura said that his work kept him busy and she couldn’t see Syaoran for a long time. Sakura wanted to confess her feeling to Syaoran but just as she tried to utter the world, the bell rung loudly.
The bell tolls meant Sakura had to go back to the castle. Before leaving, Sakura told Syaoran that she would definitely say those words and he must wait for them. Unknowingly to Sakura, Syaoran also felt the same towards her but tried to hide his feeling due to the vast difference between their social roles.
Back at the castle, Sakura tried to sneak behind king Touya, but he saw her anyway. He was upset that she went to see Syaoran but Yukito – the royal priest, appeared and told Touya to stop. Touya and Yukito later talked when Sakura has gone to her room, that even though Touya hasn’t approve of Syaoran, he was the only one for her.
Yukito had a vision that they would face terrible danger because Sakura held unknown powers. Though these powers were strong enough to change the world, it would bring them many hardships.
When Sakura was looking out the balcony, she heard strange sound of bells and they were calling her from the ruins afar. She had several visions of things that were about to happen.
The next day, Syaoran went deeper into the ruins. There, he found an odd symbol that was not of this kingdom and that he has never seen before.
Suddenly, Sakura appeared to bring him some lunch, but Syaoran worried that something could happen to her since this area of the excavation site didn’t have any safety precautions in place. Sakura saw the rock with strange symbol and said that she envisioned that symbol the night before.
As she touched it, Sakura went under a trance. The ground split open and Sakura descended into some sort of a passage.
Up above, Yukito and Touya also felt an earthquake, but Yukito insisted that it wasn't an earthquake. Right then, a group of people dressed in all black suddenly came out of portals and started to attack them.
Sakura was now suspended high up on the wall, in front of another wing shaped symbol. She still in a state of trance and couldn’t hear Syaoran calling. Behind her back, giant wings appeared.
Meanwhile, a peculiar man in black was watching them through a mirror and said that the feathers would show him the way to get past the next dimension. And that power shall be revived.
With those words, Sakura was pulled into the wall by a black substance, but Syaoran was able to jump up and grab her just in time. They both fell to the ground and the wings on Sakura's back shattered. The ruins began to collapse around them as Syaoran tried to carry Sakura outside.
Another girl, watching alongside the man in black, said that “It failed, didn't it?”. The man replied that everything shall start now, and he would soon have the power over time and space.
Syaoran managed to get out, only to see that there was a great battle, leaving Touya badly injured. Yukito rushed to Syaoran and Sakura’s side, he touched Syaoran’s head to read his mind. Then he told Syaoran that Sakura’s heart and memories have been scattered in the form of those feathers. Without her heart, Sakura would be nothing but an empty shell and wouldn’t survive.
Yukito hurriedly sent Syaoran and Sakura off to another world......
......to find the person with his same power of the moon and could save the princess: the Witch of Dimensions!
How will the story unfold? Will Syaoran be able to retrieve the feathers and save Sakura?
