【Devilman】Dark Fantasy x Superhero Over 50 million copies in circulation worldwide!!

Devilman is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Go Nagai.

The manga started serialization under Kodansha from 1972 to 1973, in Weekly Shounen magazine. The chapters of the manga are collected in 5 separate volumes. A 39 episodes long Anime television series was also adapted.

Over 50 million copies of the manga are in circulation, worldwide. It was very well received. Critics also enjoyed the manga due to its unique take on the superhero genre, and also recommended it to others. Spin-offs like, Devilman Grimoire, Devilman VS Hades, and the Devilman Saga were also published.

The story begins with Akira Fudo, the protagonist, and his friend Miki, meeting after school. As they are walking home together, Miki teases Akira by stating, how he used to be a crybaby in elementary school.

That is when they are stopped by a bunch of delinquents, who start bad-mouthing Akira and Miki’s relationship.

Akira tries to ignore them and takes Miki from the other side, but she turns around and starts slapping the delinquents. One of the guys catches Miki and pins her to the wall.

Miki asks Akira for help, but he gets confused as to what he should do. That is when Akira’s best friend, Asuka shows up asking Akira to come with him.

Akira says that he can’t leave Miki alone with these delinquents. Upon hearing this, Asuka takes a rifle out from underneath his jacket and shoots the the delinquents in their feet, causing them to run away.

As Akira gets in Asuka’s car, he asks him, why he has been acting so strangely today. Asuka explains how his father committed suicide by pouring gasoline and litting himself on fire. His father left him a frightening inheritance, something Asuka wishes he never found out about.

As they arrive at Asuka’s mansion, he tells Akira to think it over one last time, because once he goes inside, there is no turning back. Akira stands at the gate thinking that how going through these gates could change his life forever. The ill-fated sound of the gates rang in his ears.
