Yu Yu Hakusho is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

It started serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shounen Jump from December 1990 to July 1994. The series has been collected in 19 separate volumes. YuYu Hakusho has over 50 million copies sold in Japan alone. It also won the Shogakukan Manga Award for shounen manga in 1993.

An anime series was also adapted, consisting of 112 episodes.

The story begins with Yusuke Urameshi, the protagonist, looking over his dead body, as the medical squad put’s his body on a stretcher. Yusuke tries to get his attention by punching him, but his fist passes right through him.

Three hours earlier, we see Yusuke having a smoke on the school roof. Keiko Yukimura arrives In a really bad mood, and tells him to go to the principal’s office. Yusuke pays no attention to her and even tries to peak under her skirt, for which Keiko slaps him.

As he leaves, Yusuke comes across two students with one stating that he took some other kids wallet by saying that he was Yusuke’s cousin. Yusuke shows himself and demands five hundred yen for using his name.

Just as the boys are about to pay Yusuke, a teacher shows up and insults him by saying that delinquents like him do not deserve to study at a school.

As he exits the school premise, he lights a cigarette but gets whacked on the head by the principal. The principal cares about Yusuke and tells him to come to his office for a chat, but Yusuke just runs away.

Later that day, as he walks down the road, some delinquents try to surround Yusuke but instead get beaten up by him.

As he keeps walking, he sees a kid playing with a ball near the road. He goes to him and makes him laugh by making funny faces, then tells him to play somewhere else. As he looks back, he sees a car coming towards the kid, he manages to push the kid away just in time, but gets run over and dies.

As his soul is flying above the road, an Escorter of souls, Botan, shows up and offers him a revival test, since his death was not necessary. Yusuke refuses at first but then at his funeral, he sees the kid he saved, wanting to talk to him when he wakes up, he decides to take the test.

Will Yusuke be able to pass the test and come back to life?
