Seraph of the End is a Japanese manga series of dark fantasy genre, written by Takaya Kagami and illustrated by Yamato Yamamoto with storyboards by Daisuke Furuya.

This manga series started serialization in Shueisha’s Jump SQ in September 2012. It’s individual chapters are collected in 25 separate volumes. The series has over 12 million copies in circulation, worldwide, as of June 4th 2021. It was also nominated for the 40th Kodansha Manga Award for Shounen category.

An anime series adaptation was also released by Wit Studio, in two parts, with each season consisting of 12 episodes.

“One day...... An unknown virus brought the world to a sudden end. Only children survived. Those children were enslaved by creatures that arose from the depths of the earth......Vampires.”

The story begins with Yuichiro Hyakuya, the protagonist, and his friend, Mikaela Hyakuya, talking about different ways to kill a vampire, when two vampires enter and take some of their blood.

As they leave after donating their blood, they come across Lord Ferid, a noble, who invites Mikaela to visit his mansion again while touching his cheeks. Mikaela happily agrees to Lord Ferid, this really angers Yu.

After lord Ferid leaves, Mikaela tries to explain to Yu that giving some blood to Lord Fried enables him to certain advantages, but Yu is too angry to listen, and storms off.

Later, Akane comes to Yu, and they both recall the day when Yu first came into the Hyakuya Orphanage. That was also the day when all adults started dying and Vampires arose from beneath the ground.

They both return home, where Yu is shocked to see that Akane is making curry, because vampires only ever give them food scraps to eat. Akane tells Yu that Mikaela brought this is exchange for the blood he gave to Lord Ferid.

Mikaela comes home late that night, Yu is waiting for him, Mikaela tells Yu that when he went to Lord Ferid’s mansion, he stole a gun and a map that showed the way out of this underground city.

They wake everyone up, and make way towards the exit. Just as they reach the final exit, Lord Ferid reveals himself saying that this was all planned by him to see the despair on the kids faces. He further reveals that the map is correct, and if they can manage to get past him, they’ll be free to leave to the human world.

Before the children can do anything, Lord Ferid starts killing them mercilessly, one by one. Yu and Mikaela try to shoot him but his Vampire powers are too great for them. Lord Ferid kills everyone of the children, seeing this, Mikaela charges at him with the gun, but Lord Ferid stabs him and cuts off his arm, at that moment, Yu catches the gun and shoots Lord Ferid at point blank range, killing him.

Yu tries to drag Mikaela with him, but Mikaela pushes him away, saying that it is too late for him, and he must save himself. Yu starts running through the exit with tears in his eyes, and manages to escape to the human world. There he meets some mysterious humans who ask for his help to kill the vampires.

And so begins the battle between the vampires and the humans!
