DEATH NOTE, A wildly popular psychological thriller manga with over 30 million copies sold in Japan!!

Death Note is a psychological thriller manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The manga was serialized from December 2003 to May 2006 in Weekly Shonen Jump. Since then, its popularity has led to numerous adaptations. Ranging from anime television series to live-action films and a television drama, fans of this renowned series will have many opportunities to enjoy its masterfully written story.

In 2017, Death Note has been reimagined as a Netflix Original Story. And as of 2021, a sequel for this adaptation has been in pre-production.

The story began with a scene that connected the “Realm of the Shinigami (God of Death)” and the “Human World”.

In the first few frames, we learnt that a Shinigami named Ryuk had dropped his Death Note in the human world and was on his way to look for it.

And the one who happened to come across this cursed Death Note is none other than the main character – 17-year-old Yagami Light. He was a top student with superior intellect who was always bored of the mediocre world around him.

The mysterious black Note only had its name – “DEATH NOTE” omniously written on the cover. And when Light opened it, the first page had a detailed instructions on “How to use it”, all written in English.

“The person whose name was written in this Note will die within 40 seconds. If the cause of death is not specified, that person will die of a heart attack”. Sounded like a bad joke somebody who had too much free time would prepared. Of course no normal person would ever fall for this kind of prank......

...... But it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try, right? – Light thought.

The mysterious Note and its power piqued Light’s curiosity. He decided to turn on the news and tested to see how far this “prank” would go. On the news was a LIVE broadcasting of a nearby hostage situation in Shinjuku. 8 hostages, including little children were being held by a 42-year-old unemployed man named Otaharada Kurou.

Light tried to write Otaharada Kurou’s name in the Death Note and waited for 40 seconds......

Just when he thought that nothing would happened, all of the hostages were suddenly released at the scene. The police stormed inside the building just to find Otaharada Kurou, lying dead on the ground.

The police emphasized that they did not open fire, while the escaped hostages claimed that their captor suddenly collapsed. It must have been a heart attack! – Light thought.

“Light!” Light’s mom yelling his name had dragged him back to reality. Being a high school senior preparing for the upcoming exam, he still had to go to cram school that night.

On the way home from cram school, Light came across a bunch of delinquents troubling a young girl. One of them had blurted out his name “Shibuimaru Takuo”, and Light was there to hear it.

This was his second opportunity to test out the Note. This time, he was there to witness and confirm once and for all if the Note’s power was real or not. Light entered the nearby convenient store and carefully hid the Note in between a magazine, pretended to read it while writing his victim’s name and cause of death. “Death by accident” – he wrote.

40 second had passed. And suddenly, a loud crash could be heard from the street in front of him......

Shibuimaru Takuo was hit by a truck and was instantly killed. No deny it this time, the Note’s power and all its rules were true.

Only then, it finally hit Light that he had killed 2 people that night by writing their name down in the Note of Death. However, instead of being weighed down by guilt, Light reassured himself that what he did was right. He would only kill the rotten people of this world and the world would become a much better place without them.

Light’s overflowing confident in his intelligence and absolute sense of justice made him firmly believe that he was the only one who could use this Death Note to change the world. He would not use it for personal gain but to get rid of those rotten people and achieve an ideal world – a perfect world.

At that time, Ryuk - the original owner of the Death Note finally decided to pay Light a visit to observe the show that Light was putting on. There, Ryuk explained to Light that he was bored with his unchanging world of Death and wanted something fun to watch, that was the reason why he dropped the Note to the human world. All for the sake of his own entertainment.

Everyone would be surprised and scared in the face of a Shinigami, but not Yagami Light. He quickly regained his confident and proclaimed that with the power of the Death Note, he would become the God of this new world he was about to create.

“I was right. Human is fun!!!”. Look like Ryuk’s boredom would not be a problem for a while.

At the meeting of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), news of “52 death row inmates had died in one week, all due to mysterious heart attacks” has become the talk of the house.

Interpol finally treated this case as a serious threat and started moving on it. Behind a computer screen, a mysterious figure watched the meeting and smiled as he considered his next move.

Who is this person? Will he and the Interpol be able to find out that these unexplainable deaths are the work of Yagami Light? The battle starts now.
