Hello, everybody! I really don’t get what the ‘Steampunk’ we often see in manga, really means…… It’s Saori from Manga Republic!
Hello, everybody. From my research, the ‘Steampunk’ is one of the SF genres. It’s ‘a retro futuristic subgenre of science fiction that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery,’ according to my research. I’m Manga Republic’s Boss.
Well…… so it’s a SF genre which the steam-powered machinery is developed, huh……? And guess what? A manga series with romance mixed with the ‘Steampunk,’ ‘vampire,’ and ‘dark fantasy’ is now made into an anime series and scheduled to premiere in July this year!!

It’s written and illustrated by Mochizuki Jun-Sensei, who is very popular and also created a well-known series “PandoraHearts.”
This “The Case Study of Vanitas” has been serialized in Monthly magazine, ‘Gangan Joker’ since 2015. As for its comics, 8 volumes have been released so far and Volume 9 is scheduled to release in June this year.
Oh! She’s the author of ‘PandoraHearts,’ huh? That’s been also serialized in Gangan too, right?

Right! PandoraHearts was such a popular series with the genres, gothic × dark fantasy too! Well, this is her latest work! The Case Study of Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte)……! What kind of story is it?

Outline of The Case Study of Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte)!

Vampires emerge in the city of Paris.
The news spread out in town instantly, making people scared. As many as nine people have already been killed by the vampires and the blood of those people were taken by them too.
They say vampires have been vanished after they were beaten by humans in the war……?
The story starts off on the airship heading for Paris.
A boy named Noé Archiviste, who has ridden the airship for the first time, saves a sick woman.
Noé finds out that the woman is heading for Paris to recover her innate disease…… Then he also gives her his purpose to go to Paris:
I’m going to Paris to find a cursed book called “Book of Vanitas,” which appears in the fairy tale.
In this world, they say vampires are born on the night of red full moon.
However, Vanitas was born on the night of blue full moon, which made other vampires think he’s creepy.
One day, the vampire, Vanitas, curses one book.
The curse is as followed: Once anybody read this book, they will have “blue eyes” just like him and become a “Death God,” which will kill all the vampires who were born on the night of red moon……
There is no way such a book in the fairy tale would exist.
However, Noé says that he has received a letter from his master, saying “Someone might have found the Book of Vanitas in Paris.” That’s how he has decided to head for Paris……
Now, he will soon be arriving at Paris, when…… the woman who he has been talking with, becomes sick all of a sudden.
While Noé tries to help her out, she refuses the offer. Then Noé notices something.
Her red eyes, shining in the dark…… Yes, she is the vampire……
The next moment, someone breaks into the airship, smashing the glass window, from “outside of the airship.” The mysterious man is now targetting her……!
Noé covers her right away.
The mysterious man threatens to Noé, telling him to “give her back.” However, Noé would never accept that order and starts to run away from him toward the back of the airship but……!
“Those red eyes…… That one is another vampire too, huh?”
The intruder finds that Noé is also a vampire.
Still, he is trying to protect the vampire woman with the red eyes but……
The woman attacks Noé all of a sudden.
While she is told that “We, the Vampires, are not allowed to attack humans,” she would never stop attacking Noé, trying to suck his blood.
Then the intruder saves Noé.
He says that he is a special doctor “for the vampire” and he breaks into the airship to treat her who is now out of control.
Then the intruder takes an old book out of his pocket.
As soon as Noé sees it, he understands……
……that that’s the Book of Vanitas.
Wow~~~! It’s a classic type of dark fantasy, huh?
I have to say that we haven’t had a super classic type fantasy series like this one for a long time! The storyline is interesting and easy to understand! I’m guessing this series will go viral after it airs in summer!!!
