Hello, everybody~! Speaking of a fist, it’s a punch! Speaking of the punch, I associate it with Kung fu. It’s Saori from Manga Republic.
So! The theme of the manga series we’ll be featuring today is…… The ‘fist’! But it’s neither boxing nor Kung fu. It’s a story about the ‘fist fighters,’ who played an active role in the ancient Rome!

What Is Cestvs: The Roman Fighter?

It’s a manga series by Wazarai Shizuya-Sensei.
The first series, Kentō Ankoku Den Cestvs, was serialized in the magazine, Young Animal from 1997 to March 2009. A second series, Kendo Shitō Den Cestvs, has currently been serialized in Young Animal.
An anime television series adaptation is set to premiere in April 2021, as the title Kentou Ankokuden Cestvs. It’s been directed by a Japanese professional boxer, so the viewers can feel more realistic about the story.

According to my research, Cestvs indicates the equipment that the fist fighters used to use in the ancient Roma. It looks like the hard leather strings wrapped around the wrists and hands, just like the ones, shown below. And it gradually indicated people who fight with their fists!
Alright! Well, let’s take a look at the outline!

Outline of Cestvs: The Roman Fighter!

The fist is the first weapon that humans have got. Humans have started to fight with their fists since the mythical age, and in time, one martial art was born.
That’s the “fist fighting.”
It’s a sport which has been attracted explosively as one of the ancient Roman national sports.
The story is set in the suburbs of the ancient Rome…… specifically in the training school for the slave pugilists.
Among all the slave boys who aim to become the fist fighters, there is one special boy who is extremely talented.
His name is Cestvs.
He would easily catch a fly, flying around the room and set it free outside of the window. The speed of his catching the fly is so fast that other boys cannot even see it clearly. And also, it moves so precisely.
Even though it’s a “training school”…… the boys are being treated so badly. As for the meals, they are always a first come, first serve-style. So they are always competing against each other. Among them, there is one leader who organizes everybody.
His name is Rocco.
He is in great shape and takes really good care of everybody, leading them all. For Cestvs, he is the one who understands him very well, and both aim to become the fist fighters.
One rainy day…… the moment of fate comes along.
That day, all the boys are taken away from the school and brought to the place where they take the “final screening.” Only those who pass the screening will be able to step forward to becoming the fist fighters. First, Centvs and Rocco are called.
Rocco, who is in great shape, is one of the best candidates among the soldiers too.
On the contrary, Cestvs is thin and knows how strong Rocco is when it comes to fighting, more than anybody.
Now, they face each other to fight.
Both of them, being close friends, of course hesitate.
However, Rocco blows a swift attack so he can defeat Cestvs with only one blow.
However, he misses it.
Instead, Rocco gets a blow from Cestvs, almost falling down.
Cestvs, feeling hesitated about punching his close friend, is not able to attack him again but……
Cestvs finally counterattacks him, being encouraged by his trainer and even Rocco as well.
Cestvs dodges Rocco’s blow swiftly and gives him a huge blow to win.
Rocco loses.
However, Centvs is crying. His heart hurts by punching his best friend so much that he strongly wishes they won’t have to fight again. Rocco, being surprised by Cestvs’s potential, shakes hands with him, saying “No apology. You’re the one who won.”
And……
Rocco is killed.
He is mercilessly executed, being told that the loser of the final screening is not worth living.
That’s the beginning of everything.
For Cestvs, who will be a famous fist fighter, that day has become a fatal day which he can never forget.
What a sad episode……
The story, Cestvs, is a manga series depicting a boy, Cestvs, who continuously fights as a fist fighter but at the same time, it also focuses on the history or life style of the ancient Rome! Especially, the author tried hard, learning how he can make it more detailed, so we will not only enjoy it as a sport manga but we can also feel the old history! It also gives us an explanation to each detailed setting so we can actually learn too~!
