What if you expected to be transported to another world, gain incredible special abilities that amaze everyone, and achieve great things, only to find yourself with stats worse than an ordinary person? “Shinja Zero no Megami-sama to Hajimeru Isekai Kouryaku,” which we are introducing today, is an isekai fantasy manga that begins from such a hopeless situation. Based on the light novel by Isle Oosaki, the protagonist is Makoto Takatsuki, a high school student who passionately loves games. What awaited him after being transported to another world along with his classmates was a harsh reality far from the heroic life he had dreamed of. However, this protagonist is no mere dropout. His determination to keep searching for his own way to clear the game even in overwhelmingly disadvantageous circumstances is a major highlight of this work.

The story begins when Makoto Takatsuki and his peers are caught in an unexpected accident on their way home from a training camp. When he next opens his eyes, he finds himself in an unfamiliar alternate world. What is more, the classmates transported with him were each granted powerful abilities. However, Makoto was given the unreliable role of an “apprentice mage,” and his stats were disastrously low, not even reaching those of an ordinary person. While everyone around him receives blessed powers, being left behind all alone is a rather cruel turn of events, isn't it? Normally, one's spirit might break, but Makoto is a true-born gamer. His mindset that the harder the situation is, the more worthwhile it is to conquer makes this story so captivating.

Appearing before Makoto is Noah, a goddess who does not have a single believer. When one hears “goddess,” one typically imagines a sacred being revered by many people, but Noah is completely different. She actually appears in his dream and desperately begs Makoto to become her believer. The setup of a deity desperately looking for believers is truly unique, isn't it? Thus, Makoto becomes Noah's very first believer, marking the start of their strange relationship. However, this goddess seems to have some hidden circumstances. Why does she have no followers, and what kind of secret is she hiding? The mysteries that pique curiosity as the story progresses are also elements that draw readers in.

Makoto's goal is the “Seafloor Temple,” where the goddess Noah is said to be sealed away. Moreover, it is a dungeon that humanity has not yet reached. The idea of the weakest-class protagonist aiming for a place that even adventurers with immense power could hardly approach seems reckless, doesn't it? However, this is where Makoto's gaming experience becomes essential. If you cannot win in a head-on battle, you just need to think of another method. If your stats are lacking, you just need to compensate with wisdom and ingenuity. Such an approach, reminiscent of beating a video game, supports his adventure. Rather than a simple contest of strength, how he carves out a path under limited conditions is where the unique charm of this work lies.

Personally, what particularly draws me to this work is that the protagonist does not possess overwhelming strength from the start. In isekai works, exhilarating developments where the protagonist defeats enemies one after another with special powers are popular, but this title entertains from a different angle. In Makoto's case, because he cannot rely on gifted talents, every single decision becomes critical. It is also fascinating that his trait of being a gamer does not end as a mere hobby, but directly connects to his mindset for surviving in an alternate world. Furthermore, the seemingly unreliable combination of a goddess with zero believers and the weakest mage holds a distinct appeal. Because neither of them is in an advantageous position, it makes you naturally want to root for them to see how far they will grow.

“Shinja Zero no Megami-sama to Hajimeru Isekai Kouryaku” is not a mere rags-to-riches story, but a work where you can relish the fun of figuring out how to clear difficult situations. An adventure utilizing the protagonist's wit, a relationship with a goddess carrying secrets, and an epic destination in the form of the Seafloor Temple. With multiple intriguing elements prepared, expectations build for what kind of developments lie ahead. In particular, anyone who has experienced clearing difficult stages in a game through repeated trial and error will likely empathize with Makoto's challenge. Even if you aren't the strongest from the start, the future can be changed depending on your ingenuity. This is an isekai fantasy manga that is a must-read for anyone who wants to enjoy the true thrill of such an adventure.
