What would you do if there were a mask that gave you unimaginable power just by putting it on? You might think, “I'd definitely want to try something that useful!” However, what if that power stripped away your very will and caused harm to those dear to you...? Depicting such a terrifying yet fascinating world is “Shuiro no Kamen,” with original story by Dr.Poro and art by Nabana Naba. This work is a battle fantasy in which a boy confronts a harsh fate revolving around masks harboring mysterious abilities. It is not simply an adventure story about defeating powerful enemies and growing stronger. The greatest highlight is seeing the protagonist, having committed an irreversible mistake, rise from the depths of despair to confront his own sins.

The protagonist of the story is Pel, a boy diligently training as an apprentice under the legendary mask craftsman Gaston Roux. Surrounded by his respected master and precious companions, his life full of hope for the future changes completely after a certain day. The cause of this was the “Mask of the War God,” which harbored a terrifying will. The moment he casually picked it up, Pel's mind was possessed by the mask, driving him into an uncontrollable rampage beyond his power to stop. Then, an all too cruel tragedy occurs. To everyone's shock, with his own hands, he ended up killing not only his companions, but even his beloved master. What awaited him when he finally regained his sanity was the tragic sight of his precious loved ones, altered beyond recognition. It is a tragedy that makes one want to cry out, “Why did this happen...?”, but lost lives will never return. This shocking opening strongly shakes the reader's heart.

Normally, one would be crushed by such immense guilt and might lose even the will to live. Naturally, Pel is also plunged into deep despair. However, he does not choose the path of ending his life there. Resolving to survive “until the day he can forgive himself,” he imposes upon himself the immense mission of destroying all the dangerous masks left behind in the world by his master, Gaston. This is what makes “Shuiro no Kamen” so poignant. His journey is not one in pursuit of fame or fortune, but atonement itself for his past mistake. Moreover, destroying the masks will not bring back the people who were lost. Even so, the boy's resolve to keep moving forward carries a weight that cannot be described by simple righteousness alone.

Essential to discussing this work is the existence of the masks harboring various possibilities. The setting where they grant astounding abilities to those who wear them, while that very power can also invite disaster, is truly thrilling. The anticipation of “What kind of mask will appear next?” and the anxiety of “What dangers lurk within that ability?” swell simultaneously. It is not simply a matter of gaining an advantage by acquiring powerful tools; the interesting part is how it makes you think about the will of those who wield power and the price that comes with it. In addition to confronting mighty foes, the terror possessed by the masks themselves creates tension in the story.

The appeal of “Shuiro no Kamen” lies in the combination of intense ability battles and profound human drama. Pel meets new friends during his journey and faces numerous difficulties. However, no matter how far he advances, the past he carries will never disappear. That is precisely why a special meaning can be felt in the birth of new bonds. Will he truly be able to destroy all the masks left behind by his master? And above all, will the day come when he can forgive himself? For those who want to see not only flashy battles, but also the protagonist striving to live despite his anguish, this is a work you should definitely experience. What the masks conceal may not be just faces, but human weakness, desire, and fate.
