【Gorging x Comedy】 Eat! Eat! Just Keep Eating! Packed with Humor! Dokagui Daisuki! Mochizuki-san!

2024-11-13
“Dokagui Daisuki! Mochizuki-san” is a manga by Maruyono Kamome that depicts the slightly dangerous and humorous daily life of a female office worker, Mochizuki Mikoto, who is fully devoted to eating. Her way of relieving stress is to eat heavily seasoned food — so salty it might as well turn her blood into seawater — in massive quantities in one go. She calls this act “dokagui” (gorging), eating to the limit and sometimes even “reaching a climax",” in other words, passing out due to a blood sugar spike. For example, in the first episode, after working overtime until late at night, she devours two gigantic cups of instant yakisoba in one go, “reaching a climax,” and is found passed out in the office kitchenette by her coworkers.
Just a few months after the start of the series, it was already nominated for the “NEXT MANGA AWARDS 2024” and won both 8th place in the Web Manga category and the Frozen Food Award. With its unique “dokagui” theme, it's rapidly gaining popularity.
Mochizuki-san’s character is simply outstanding. Her sequence of actions leading up to a “dokagui fainting” is thrilling yet comical, pulling readers in with its entertaining charm. Her wild binge-eating style, leading up to a full “dokagui,” makes readers feel a strange admiration, even while understanding how unhealthy it must be.
Many readers may feel, “I'd love to eat like that, but I could never actually do it......” and yet find themselves strangely resonating with her deep down. The nickname “gourmet horror manga” perfectly captures her extreme eating habits. Readers can't help but turn the pages, silently shouting, “You're going to die, Mochizuki-san!”
What makes this manga so remarkable is the way Mochizuki-san’s “unhealthy pleasures” resonate with readers on some level. She silently devours meals averaging over 3,000 calories, showing no reactions or expressions of enjoyment, just gobbling it all down. Her disregard for health and pure indulgence sparks a desire in modern readers, who constantly practice self-restraint, to think, “Maybe it's okay to indulge a bit like this.” Perhaps deep down, we all harbor a similar desire to think, “It would feel amazing to eat that much......” like Mochizuki-san.
Additionally, her iconic line, “The problem is that it exists,” encapsulates her struggle between desire and reason, resonating with a uniquely poignant realism. It's rare to find a work that portrays emotions toward “eating” so directly, and this single-mindedness creates both humor and relatability.
At first glance, Mochizuki-san may appear soft and cute, but her “dokagui” style creates a stark contrast with that image. Her serious expression in front of a mountain of food and the glint in her eye as she devours it all convey a unique, comical madness not seen elsewhere. This further enhances the entertainment value of the work.
The charm of this manga lies not just in Mochizuki-san’s eating but in how her actions reflect her stress, desires, and joy. This work, which portrays her unique relationship with food, might remind us all that there are moments when we feel “saved by food.” As readers, we may want to say, “Please take care of your health,” but at the same time, we can’t help but want to see her push to the limit, making this work irresistibly captivating.
We hope she takes care of her health, but we can’t take our eyes off Mochizuki-san, who loves dokagui to the core!
