My Wife is Wagatsuma-san is a romantic comedy manga series written by Kuraishi Yuu and illustrated by Nishikida Keishi. The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine from September 2011 to September 2014, with a total of 13 volumes. My Wife is Wagatsuma-san was then published in English on various online platforms across the world.

The story follows Aoshima Hitoshi, a 2nd year high school student, who leads a normal life. He is not the popular type and has rather average grades. Hitoshi and his friends want to have a girlfriend to experience what they call “youth” at least once. Hitoshi specifically set his eyes on Wagatsuma Ai, a beautiful and smart girl who was very popular among her classmates. One day, he goes to bed while holding on to the image of his dream girl, and unknowingly time-slips 10 years into the future. In that short-lived vision, he and Wagatsuma are married and have a loving relationship.

Thanks to that, Hitoshi is able to use the future knowledge to gain insights into what Wagatsuma likes. However, Hitoshi soon discovers that what he does in the present can also affect his future, including an outcome where he is not married to Wagatsuma.

17 years old Aoshima Hitoshi was a member of the Zaishou High School volleyball team – specifically as a bench warmer. Hitoshi and his best friends, Masao and Shirou, joined the school volleyball with one goal in mind. They wanted to be able to freely look at pretty girls.

The down side was that they had to do all the basic chores as bench-warmers for the team. However, this was a small price to pay considering the perks.

Hitoshi and his friends were bragging about their dream girls when Hitoshi’s eyes were taken away by a beautiful figure on the other side of the fence.

Wagatsuma Ai was standing there in her swimsuit. She was a star member of the school’s swimming team and was considered the prettiest girl in her class. Wagatsuma was obviously out of Hitoshi’s league. The three of them were dragged out of their day-dream by one of the junior, asking them to continue their chores.

That night, Hitoshi went to sleep and had the most wonderful dream. When he opened his eyes, he was greeted by Wagatsuma Ai in her pyjamas, right next to him.

Hitoshi tried to calm down and looked around. It was not his usual room, and it was February instead of July. Hitoshi realized that he was dreaming.

When Hitoshi tried to at least kiss her before waking up, Wagatsuma happily closed her eyes and waited for his lips. Mustering all of his courage, Hitoshi went in for the kiss but woke up before he could have the chance.

Next morning, Hitoshi couldn’t take his eyes off Wagatsuma. The more he realized his true feelings, the more Hitoshi came to understand the differences in their social standing, and his chance to be with her was close to zero.

After school, Hitoshi tried to cheer himself up by going to his favorite bookstore. He brought a great book and couldn’t wait to get home and enjoy it. At that moment, Hitoshi spotted Wagatsuma. He tried to greet her but ended up accidentally followed her into a nearby restaurant.

Hitoshi had to go with the flow and sat down at a table. Without much money, he could only order a simple cup of coffee. While waiting for his drink, Hitoshi heard some coughing and looked to the other table. He saw a pregnant lady coughing due to the tabacco smoke coming from the scary man sitting behind her.

Hitoshi couldn’t turn a blind eye to the helpless lady. He finally stepped up to the scary-looking man and told him that he shouldn’t smoke inside a restaurant, especially in front of a pregnant woman. Hearing that, the woman immediately shouted at Hitoshi. It turned out that she wasn’t pregnant, just fat. Feeling humiliated and embarrased, Hitoshi tried to escape the situation as fast as possible.

Right then, he was called back by Wagatsuma’s lovely voice. She was working at the restaurant as a waitress and wanted to hand Hitoshi back the book that he had forgotten. Wagatsuma realized Hitoshi was from the same school and asked him to keep a secret about her part-time job.

Fired up by the idea that the two of them having a shared secret, Hitoshi made a grand gesture to promise with Wagatsuma and dropped his book. When she picked it up, Wagatsuma accidentally saw the content of the book - it was an erotic book about maids. She ran away without leaving a single word.

Returning home after the incident, Hitoshi decided to just sleep away the day. That night, he had the same dream about Wagatsuma.

In Hitoshi’s dream, Wagatsuma was remenising about the first time they talked together. To Hitoshi’s surprise, she brought up the story about his erotic magazine and their first encounter.

The year “2021” was written on the calendar – it was ten years into the future. Hitoshi tried to piece the story together and realized that these might not have been just dreams. Hitoshi concluded that they were visions into a possible future, where he and Wagatsuma were married.

After realizing this fact, Hitoshi was filled with joy and frustration about how to make his dreams come true......
