Natsume Takashi is a high school student who has a unique body condition. He can see Ayakashi that normal people can’t.

He lost his parents when he was little. He was adopted by his relatives, but due to his unique condition, people have been scared of him and he has never been able to settle at one place.

Recently, Natsume has been settling with his father’s relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Fujiwara Shigeru and Touko without telling them about his unique ability. He is trying to keep a good relationship with them and live quietly.

Natsume’s deceased grandmother, Natsume Reiko, also had the same unique ability with Natsume that she could communicate with the Ayakashi. She fought against Ayakashi before and won the battle. She earned them as her subordinate and took their name. The name was written in Yuujinchou and it is one of her belongings after her death.

Reiko created Yuujinchou. Once she listed the Ayakashi’s name in it, she could make it as her subordinates. So, if you own the Yuujinchou, you gain the list of Ayakashi subordinates. To avoid being taken, Takashi asked an upper level of the Ayakashi, Madara, who has been sealed in maneki neko to protect the Yuujinchou.

Since Madara is sealed in Maneki neko, he moves around as a maneki neko. He is usually called as Nyanko-Sensei, but his original figure is huge white beast. He can fly and help Natsume when needed.

Natsume keeps and tries to save the Yuujinchou that his grandmother left. He feels close to his grandmother due to the same unique ability. When the Ayakashi whose name was taken by his grandmother comes to him, he is always happy to return their names.

Since Natsume is so nice and kind, his rumor was spread out among the Ayakashi. So, some troubled Ayakashi ask him to help solve some problems they have.

Due to Natsume’s ability to see Ayakashi, he has no choice but to live in solitary. However, communicating with Ayakashi through Yuujinchou that his grandmother left, he started having warm relationships between himself and the Ayakashi. Furthermore, the kind relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Fujiwara, and school friends are also joining his life.

Through the Yuujinchoiu, the Ayakashi and Natsume and Nyanko-Sensei have been weaving bonds between them. Sometimes they must face danger, but sometimes they have peaceful days too ......

Natsume sometimes has difficulty to keep good relationships with Haraiya, Natori Shuuichi and Matoba Seiji Natori. Because their job is to dispel the Ayakashi that can harm people. Also he minds too much when he talks with his school friends such as Tanuma Kaname and Taki Tooru. He struggles to live with his condition, but tries to do his best and grows up through each episodes with the Ayakashi and his friends. I often get emotional while reading this manga!

The story takes place in the quiet countryside where Mr. and Mrs. Fujiwara live. They feel sorry to make Takashi live in such a rural area. It seems the Kumamoto prefecture is the area for the story, where the author, Midorikawa Yuki – Sensei is from. The area had collaboration events with this manga so that many fans has visited Kumamoto.

This popular fantasy describes Japan’s beautiful scenery nicely. The story will show readers the growth of Natsume. He is trying to get out from his solitude. The comic books are released to Volume 28.
