【Inuyashiki】 Superhero x Science Fiction Nominated for Best Comic award in the 2017 annual Angouleme International Comics Festival!!

Inuyashiki is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku.

The series was serialized in Kodansha’s Seinen manga magazine Evening from January 2014 to July 2017. It’s 74 chapters are compiled and collected into 10 separate volumes. The series was nominated for Best Comic in the 44th annual Angouleme International Comics Festival 2017.

An anime television series adapted by MAPPA Studio was released in 2017, consisting of 11 episodes. A live-action adaptation was also released in 2018.

The story begins with Ichiro Inuyashiki, the main character, moving into a new house with his wife and two kids. His daughter mistakes the big house as there’s but is disappointed when she finds out that there house is the small one behind it.

Dissatisfied, his wife and his two children leave Ichiro to unpack while they go out to have dinner.

Ichiro orders food but drops the idea when he hears the price, and ends up leaving his house to go and eat something.

Ichiro’s son, Takeshi, is seen being bullied by senior students, who even take all his money from him. While coming back from school with a friend, Takeshi notices his father eating Gyudon all by himself.

Next morning, Ichiro decides to adopt a pet. He heads to the animal shelter where he comes across a dog who he really feels connected to, and ends up adopting her.

Ichiro later names her Hanako.

Ichiro heads down to the store with Hanako, where he sees a bunch of delinquents picking on the shop owner, but does nothing as his son Takeshi is also present in the store. As they both are coming back from the store, they spot another gang demanding money from an office worker.

Ichiro tries to call the police but is stopped by Takeshi, who tells him not to be a hero and that he does not expect anything from him.

The next day, Ichiro is called in for a Re-examination, where he finds out that he has Stomach Cancer, and that he only has 3 months to live.

With shaking hands, he calls his wife and kids but non of them picks up his call.

With only Hanako by his side, Ichiro sits in a park thinking about his life, when tears start pouring out from his eyes.

He returns home, but seeing the cold behavior of his family, can’t bring himself to tell them about his cancer and wonders if they’ll even cry when he dies.

He leaves his house with Hanako and upon reaching the park, he breaks down, crying his heart out realizing that his life had no purpose, when he looks up and sees a young boy standing next to him.

That is when an Unidentified Flying Object crashes into them, causing a giant explosion, killing both Ichiro and the young boy.

To revive the old man, the life forms in the UFO use advanced technology to recreate his body by making him into a machine.

Ichiro wakes up, saying to Hanako, “ Yes...... I’m ok. Now...... let’s head home”?
