School Rumble is a Japanese rom-com manga series written and illustrated by Jin Kobayashi.

The manga series was serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shounen Magazine from 2002 to 2008. Its chapters are compiled and published into 23 separate volumes. Overall the series ranked as the 145th best-selling English translated manga series for 2008. Three video games have also been published for the series along with two light novels written by Hiroko Tokita.

An anime television series adapted by Studio Comet was released in 2004, consisting of 26 episodes. A second season was released in 2006, also of 26 episodes.

The story begins with introducing Tsukamoto Tenma and her younger sister Yakumo. Tenma, like many other girls, has fallen in love with a boy named Oji at the start of a new semester. She fidgets her way to the notice board and unwillingly glances at it.

Tenma is filled with delight after knowing that she is in the same class as Oji but falls down in despair after hearing him discuss with his friend that he was transferring schools.

Tenma resolves to keep herself occupied at home that day by doing chores while pondering a solution. She fails to come up with a solution and starts crying. As a last resort, she attempts to write a letter to Oji, confessing her love.

She spends the entire night attempting to put her feelings into words, but all she can come up with are dish names and random phrases. She decides to write everything she's feeling down on a scroll and leave it in Oji's locker the next day, hoping for the best.

She catches Oji reading her scroll after school. Even though the day had passed, Oji had not finished reading the scroll. As night fell, Oji began rereading the scroll, while Tenma thought he was almost finished. It was a long note......

Tenma realizes after he finishes reading that she forgot to write her name, rendering her entire endeavor worthless.

She overhears Oji mention the next day at school that he had decided to stay for another year because “someone had asked him to stay.” Tenma is overjoyed since her efforts were not in vain.

In the next scene, we are introduced to Harima Kenji. A delinquent high school student. Harima Kenji is introduced in the following scene. He gets on his bike after fighting some guys, declaring that this new semester he has to give it his all.

Kenji has also found love at school, and the person he has chosen is none other than Tsukamoto Tenma. He looks up Tenma's class division and sees that she's in 2-C. He focuses his energies on manifesting his name in the same class.

When a boy approaches and informs him that Kenji is in 2-D, Kenji hits him. When he looks at 2-D, he sees it's a foreigner with a similar-sounding name, so he strikes him again for confusing his name.

While Kenji is trying to find his name, a teacher comes up and reminds him that his name wasn’t there because he had to repeat a grade.

What will Kenji do now that he’s not in the same class as Tenma?
