Hunter × Hunter is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

The series started serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shounen Jump since 1998, although the manga has frequently gone on extended hiatuses since 2006. Its chapters have been collected in 36 separate volumes.

Hunter × Hunter has been a huge success, with over 78 million copies in circulation as of 2019, making it one of Shueisha’s best selling manga.

“The word ‘Unknown’ seems magic and some men are attracted by this force, they are called Hunters”.

This story begins with Gon Freecss, the protagonist, trying to catch ‘The Master of the Swamp’, a giant fish. His aunt Mito promised him that the only way she’ll sign the hunter exam registration form is If he can catch ‘The Master of the swamp’, because she thinks that it will be nearly impossible for him.

But since he is the “Protagonist”, he manages to catch the giant fish. He takes it straight to Mito and asks her to sign the form. Mito has no choice but to sign, but she doesn’t want Gon to become a Hunter like his father.

Mito hasn’t told Gon that his father, Ging Freecss, Is a hunter but Gon already knows.

As he is sitting with his animal friends, he recalls the day, three years ago, when he met Kite. Kite saves him from a Ferocious Foxbear but when goes to put down it’s cub, Gon jumps in between and promises to raise him.

Kite asks Gon if his father is Ging, he replies with a shocked expression. Kite then tells Gon about his father and how his last test as a hunter is to find Ging.

The next day, as Gon is about to leave for the hunter exams, he thanks aunt Mito for everything she has done for him. She tries to tell Gon about how his father didn’t abandon him but she took Gon from him to protect him. Gon hugs aunt Mito and gets on the boat, he waves Mito goodbye, as the boat leaves.

Other applicants on the boat tell Gon, not to get too cocky, as the Hunter exams won’t be that easy.

And so begins his journey of becoming a Hunter and meeting his father. What adventures await Gon?
