Saiki Kusuo no Sai-nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.) is a gag manga series written and illustrated by Shuichi Aso. The manga was published first as a series of one-shot chapters from 2010 to 2011, and finally got serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from May 2012 to February 2018.

An anime television series inspired by the manga was aired from July 2016 to December 2018. Following the success of anime, a live-action adaptation of The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. by Columbia Pictures (Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan) and Asmik Ace was also released in October 2017.

The series’ popularity reached the far and wide as the sequel of the original anime series, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.: Reawakened was premiered on Netflix in December 2019.

Being able to hear other people’s thoughts; seeing through walls; or manipulating objects through the power of will; those were just a small fraction of our protagonist’s powers.

His name was Saiki Kusuo, a 16 years old high school student and a powerful Psi user, or more commonly known as a psychic.

The clock went back 16 years ago, a healthy baby boy was born to a certain ordinary couple. However, the boy was hardly ordinary. A mere two weeks after his birth, he uttered his first words without even speaking aloud. And when he was only 1 year old, Saiki was able to walk in the air!

The normal reaction of any other parents would be to take their son straight to the hospital, an asylum or a research institute. However, this certain ordinary couple......

......were extremely lax. They adapted to the situation without any questions and simply treated their baby boy like a normal, bright kid. They were so proud of him.

As the years passed, Saiki’s psychic power kept growing stronger and stronger.

Aside from the already mentioned powers, Saiki could also bend metal objects like spoon without even touching them, he could read upside down cards and read people’s minds with ease. Even the slot machines were just the same as ATMs, which he could freely use to his liking and become filthy rich.

His life was a dream to many people. If they knew the powers that Saiki had, he would be praised as the world’s happiest man, blessed with everything from the moment of his birth.

Or so you would think!

Saiki’s life was far from perfect. Nobody would want to bend the spoon when they were eating; being able to read cards upside down would just ruin card games; and people’s thoughts were just plain horrible to read. Every joy in life was snatched from Saiki from the moment of his birth. In truth, he was the unhappiest man alive.

While narrating his entire life story, Saiki arrived at his house to find his father sitting outside at the doorway. He was locked outside and needed Saiki’s help to get in by using his psychic power.

Apparently, the reason his father was locked outside was because Saiki’s mother purposely did it. The two of them had been fighting for over half a year. They were madly in love with each other, now they were on a continuous daily strife.

Saiki’s mother wouldn’t even prepare a normal meal for his father. The rice was served in a shoe. “Like anybody can eat this!!” – Saiki’s father retorted and the two kept on fighting.

Stopping their fight would be easy for Saiki but he found no reason to do so. This was the problem between his parents, and it would be reckless for Saiki to use his power to try solving every problem around him. Besides, he finally found the one and only joy in his life – Coffee Jello. He just wanted to relax and quietly eat his favorite treat......

However, the fighting between his parents kept escalating, to the point where it got violent. Saiki’s father started to cling on to him and cried for help. His mother’s facial expression started to resemble that of a demon as she threw the dining table towards them.

His dessert time was interfered. That was when Saiki finally step in and stopped the table in midair.

Saiki could hear their thoughts the whole time and he knew that all the quarrel between his parents were meaningless. Beneath all the fake anger and hatred were words of love. They were just fighting for the sake of it. Nonetheless, even this meaningless fight had to stop if it dared to interfere with Saiki’s precious dessert time.

With merely a flick of his finger, Saiki used psychic power to force his parents to speak their thoughts aloud. They could no longer stop it, trying as hard as they might.

Finally, Saiki’s parents admitted that they were still madly in love with each other. Peace was restored to the Saiki household as Saiki himself also returned to his dessert time.

To make up for all the fighting, Saiki’s mother quickly snatched the coffee jello and fed it to her dearest husband. Without even a chance to react, Saiki’s treasure was taken away from him.

All hell broke loose as Saiki’s anger raged on and the window glass pane was instantly smashed in an outburst of power. It was truly not easy being a powerful psychic.
