The beginning of a great pirate age

The story of ONE PIECE began with the last words of a famous pirate on the execution stand. His name was Gold Roger – the “Pirate King”, and he had conquered every single treasure that existed.
Before being executed, Gold Roger claimed that he has hidden all of his treasures in a mysterious island and he would give the treasures to those who can find them.
Thus, began the great pirate age!

A little kid with a big dream

The main character, Monkey D. Luffy, was a little boy living in a small and peaceful village by the sea. This village was frequently visited by a pirate called “Red Haired” Shanks and his crew.
Luffy loved to hang out with Shanks’ crew, and would always ask Shanks to bring him out to sea the next time they set sail. Luffy even tried to stab himself as a show of courage, but Shanks still refused.
While the whole crew were drinking and joking around at the village bar, a group of bandits suddenly entered.
They started to cause trouble and threatened the bar owner for free drinks. When Shanks tried to diffuse the situation, the bandit leader Higuma smashed a bottle to his head.
Everyone was startled but Shanks just grinned and didn’t retaliate at all.
After the bandits have left, Shanks and his crew busted out laughing. They even joked about how silly their captain looked and how the bandits have fixed him up good.
Luffy watched the whole scene and was really angry that Shanks and his crew didn’t stand up to the bandits. “That was disgraceful!”, Luffy yelled, “You are not a man and not a pirate either!”.
Shanks tried to explain that it was a small matter and not worth fighting. Luffy refused to listen and walked away. As Shanks pulled him back to talk......
His arm! It’s stretching!!
It turned out that Luffy has accidently eaten a Devil Fruit, one of the rarest treasures in the sea that grants a power to the eater. In Luffy’s case, he obtained the power of the Rubber-Rubber fruit, which means he has become a rubber man and in exchange, Luffy would never be able to swim.
“I will become the King of Pirates!”
While Shanks and his crew left the village to set sail, the bandits reappeared at the bar.
While they were drinking, Luffy yelled at them for talking badly about Shanks. So, they took Luffy out on the road and started to beat him. The villagers couldn’t do anything but watched in fear.
As they were about to kill Luffy, Shanks and his crew returned just in time to rescue him.
Underestimating Shanks from their last encounter, the bandits pointed a gun at Shanks’ head and laughed at him. Little did they know, they were in for a surprise......
One of Shanks’ officers shot the bandits. Then without a moment of hesitation, his first mate charged ahead and defeated all of them. It was finally revealed that Shanks and his crew were mighty strong but they chose to fight only for the right reasons. And this time, it was to save Luffy.
Unfortunately, the bandit leader escaped and brought Luffy with him on a small boat. Out on the water, he mercilessly kicked Luffy off the boat as revenge. As Luffy struggle to stay afloat, a terrifying sea monster appeared and suddenly ate the bandit, along with his boat.
Luffy was also about to be eaten by the sea monster when......
......Shanks has appeared to save him!
He successfully drove the monster away but that moment costed him his left arm.
It turned out the reason Shanks didn’t take Luffy with him was that the sea is an unpredictable place and not something that humans can control. Luffy finally understood how great his savior was and hoped to become just like Shanks in the future.
The time has come for Shanks’ crew to set sail again. Luffy came to the port to bid farewell, there he claimed that he will one day find One Piece – the treasure that Gold Roger left behind, and become the King of Pirates.
Shanked laughed and gave Luffy his treasured hat as a parting gift. “This hat is my gift to you”, Shanks said, “When you become a great pirate in the future, return that hat to me”.
That was the promise he made with Shanks.
10 years later, Luffy grew up and set sail on a tiny boat with no crew. But he was much stronger than 10 years ago and this time, he defeated the sea monster that almost ate him before. All in one knock-out punch!
“Let’s go!”, Luffy shouted with a wide grin on his face, “I’ll become the King of Pirates!!!”. His long journey has finally begun.
