It’s a card game which is very famous not only in Japan but throughout the world! It’s a trading card battle with a high strategical ability, which has been loved by many fans for a long time, right?

It’s a youth manga series, set in 1990s, now serialized in Gekkan Shonen Ace. The storyline mainly focuses on “saving the crises of the world with the cards,” which is classical style for the card game’s comicalized version. Moreover, it also depicts “the youth story by some youngsters through the ‘Magic The Gathering’.”
Based on the direction of Wizards of the Coast LLC, which created the Magic The Gathering, this series was written by Ise Katura-Sensei and illustrated by Yokota Takuma-Sensei. First, one-shot version was released, which became so popular. Afterwards, it started to be serialized in January 2019. Seven volumes of the comics have been released so far.
I see this is one of the bestselling and most popular series in Manga Republic too!

The year is 1998.
The collective card game Magic: The Gathering was being played passionately in a junior high school.
The main protagonist, Kanou Hajime, is an excellent student who is academically the No.2 student.
He is addicted to the card game with a high strategical ability, called Magic The Gathering, and spends his all his days-off on playing the card battle with his friends.
One day, this girl talks to Hajime; “You’re in my way…… Can you move?”
Her name is Sawatari Emi.
She is a super excellent student who keeps academically the top student with a great body that everybody admires her. However, Hajime sees her his self-proclaimed rival and challenges her to academic battles, which frequently results in his defeat, ending up starting to quarrel with her.
One day on weekend, he has a plan to pay a visit to one particular place.
When he gets to the place, he finds out that the place looks just like a café.
According to the map, which he serached online, taking him an hour…… it’s a famous store, where “Magic The Gathering” players play the game. Hesitantly, he opens the door……
He sees so many people there.
Most of them seem adults, looking relaxed…… He feels a retro and relaxing atmosphere with figures and game machines displaying in there.
Hajime talks to the shopkeeper and he tells him that there is a table for Magic The Gathering game in the back and he can just go look around. When he reaches that table in the back……
Guess what? He finds Emi playing Magic The Gathering!
Not only does he find her there, but he also discovers that she is the undisputed best Magic player in the store.
Actually, Emi teases Hajime who always plays Magic The Gathering at school, saying it’s childish. Such a mean girl is actually playing it and is the top player…… Hajime gets excited to know that and decides to challenge her, remaining under cover wearing a hat.
The duel consists of three rounds.
For the first round, Hajime beautifully attacks her and wins, without letting her attack him.
However…… Emi starts the second round, carefully observing his strategy.
While Hajime is again expected to win…… Emi tricks him with the perfect timing and wins after all.
Emi has defeated Hajime since their childhood. Therefore, Hajime would never want to lose it on Magic The Gathering……!
Being panicked, Hajime drops the dice which was on the edge of the table. Hajime and Emi try to pick up the dice at the same time……
……when his hat fell and Emi finds out that it was Hajime!
Emi gets blushed and rushes out of the store with her purse. She even missses collecting the card deck that she was using and left while Hajime was calling her name.
Mmm~! This was how they became rivals and how they will compete against each other on Magic The Gathering, huh?
