Hello everybody! So finally! They announced the 2020 Manga winner!!! I’m Manga Republic’s Boss and today, we would like to share the one which got awarded!

Aaaand it’s Saori from Manga Republic! Maybe the winner is Makumusubi, which we’ve shared here before? Or it could be SPY×FAMILY…!?

What kind of Manga is Blue Period?

The main character, Yaguchi Yatora, is in the 2nd year high school student (11th grader). Looking good and having many friends, Yatora has lived his life with charm and his own how-to-manuals. He became the top No.4 at school in his academic performance after he went over everything with the top No.1 for a couple hours. He sets everything in his own【quota】and【task】and make everything effective and smooth when he solves things. As a result, Yatora became a “genius” with a minimum workload.
One day, Yatora encountered something.
It was a “picture”, which was breathtaking to him.
Yatora stared at it for a while and said in his mind.

『すげぇ』
“This is incredible.”

The one who painted the picture was a “boy student” named “Ryuji” who is dressed like a woman and belongs to the art club. Ryuji had Yatora’s belonging that he had left and they somehow started quarrelling.

「今どき美術系の大学行った所で、現代では将来性ないの分からない？」
“You don’t get it, huh? You’ll never have a stable job with the art degree.”

Yatora said it to Ryuji.
But that’s what Ryuji and even his art teacher knew more than anybody. The reason why he wanted to aim for the art college or he loved art so much is because…. it’s not people but himself that thinks the art is worth it. He answered.
That night, Yatora was impressed by watching the soccer game with his friend and felt…

「俺は、他人の努力で感動しているんだ。」
「自分にとっての感動とは…いったい何なのか？」
“I’m impressed by people who are making efforts.”
“Then what am I impressed by….?”

Since that day on, Yatora has realized that… he has lived, adjusting to people, instead of feeling something from “himself”, and he has chosen something easy and acceptable and mentioned what others desire..
and that… such a life is pretty easy but now he felt empty…

「あなたが青く見えるなら、うさぎもりんごも青くていいんだよ。」
“If you think they look blue, then the rabbit or the apple can look blue too.”

Yatora started drawing more seriously from the next art class.
What he drew was “the early morning in Shibuya”. That scene was so good that he even uttered, “I love it.” That Shibuya was “not Shibuya-like” Shibuya, where no people are, just like right after people watch the soccer game on TV at home.
It was just like the blue world, where it didn’t look like Shibuya or it was the beginning of the day and about to sleep.
He knows that Shibuya isn’t blue.
You might smell some garbage.
But Yatora drew the picture of blue Shibuya.
Why? Beause Yatora actually felt that way.
Yatora’s picture got a great reputation now.
Mentioning that they like something they like is scary. We get disappointed when we cannot do what we want to do.
And then, when people admit my effort, I would be so happy that I would even cry.
Yatora thought that he actually “talked” to people for the first time on that day.
Drawing is “fun” for me.
Yatora admitted it but still thinks it’s just fun to do and aiming for being the artist is something “lazy”.
Ryuji sent Yatora an email..
…saying that he wanted him to help him.

Episode 1 is already awesome. He is such a modern-type Chara and never be showy, which attracts me a lot.

By the way, as for Blue Period, it was nominated for the Manga Taisho in 2019 too but it wasn’t awarded after all… But in 2020 you’ve finally become the winner in 2020!!! Congrats!!
