The manga series we’ll be featuring today is the one whose theme is the miracle and the disaster, brought by such magic! Guess what? This series is so famous that it’s got awarded even in the USA too~!!

What Is Atelier of Witch Hat (Tongari Boushi no Atelier)?

It’s a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Shirahama Kamome-Sensei. It has been serialized in “Monthly Morning Two Magazine” since 2016. As for the comics, seven volumes have been released so far and it’s awarded the “Best U.S. Edition of International Material – Asia” at the Eisner Award, which sometimes is referred to as the “Comics Industry’s Equivalent of the Academy Awards” in 2020.
Comics industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards!? That’s amazing!!
They got awarded in 2020 so it’s quite recently, huh? It’s one of the most featured manga series! All right! Let’s take a look at what kind of story it is!

Outline of Atelier of Witch Hat (Tongari Boushi no Atelier)!

Were the athletes born as the athletes?
How about the astronauts? Idols? We have no clues……
But then…… how about the witches?
This world is full of magic.
That’s the “miracle,” making our lives abundant.
However, there was almost nobody who understood how such magic worked.
The main protagonist, Coco, is a cheerful girl, living in the small village.
Born as a normal girl, who cannot use magic, she aspires to become a witch and be able to use magic.
One day, there is a horse carriage, coming all the way from the castle town to the tailor. A noble gets off from the carriage and visits the tailor. In the same timing, a mysterious man is in the tailor as a customer too.
Coco, a daughter of the tailor, is getting the cloths that they want to purchase ready……
Seeing Coco’s good skill of handling the cloths, the man customer is impressed at it, thinking that it’s as if “magic.”
However, Coco denies it, being embarrassed. Then Coco says to the customer, “The magic is the most mysterious, brilliant and precious thing for me.”
The reason why she’s into magic is due to the memory in her childhood.
In her childhood, at the festival in the castle town, Coco got the children’s book from a wizard. The wizard told her that she would be able to use magic if she had the book and the pen but……
Her mother insisted that Coco could not use magic.
Only innate magical users could practice and use magic. Her mother told her that there was no way she could use magic only with the book and the pen. From that day on, she has come to dream about using magic……
While she is sharing the childhood story with him, the horse carriage, which the noble is on, breaks down. The boys in town break it and the noble would never forgive them unless she can go back to the castle town.
Then the man customer, who she has been talking with, suggests that he should fix it.
The man customer then greets himself, putting a “witch hat” on. Yes, the hat is proof that he is a wizard……!
Then Coco thinks that she might be able to see the exact moment when the wizard uses magic……!
Coco asks him to use her parents’ workplace but……
Sadly, he asks her to watch people since the moment when magic is being used cannot be seen by people.
But still, she wants to see magic…… “Magic” has been her dream…… and finally…… Coco ends up seeing it.
She witnesses that magic is used by drawing magical runes and using magical ink. It’s not casting but drawing…… Coco finds out the secret.
Feeling guilty, breaking his promise, watching people, Coco is not able to talk with the wizard anymore. That night…… Coco tries magic, using the “children’s book” and the “pen”, which she got from the wizard long ago……!
And Coco accidentally casts a spell.
Not knowing what’s going on, the objects glitter or get on fire……!
Not knowing how magic works, she gets so excited that she starts using various magic.
And the accident happens when she draws the big magical runes with magical ink……
It was too late when the wizard who fixed the carriage in the daytime comes back to her, sensing danger.
Coco and the wizard escape from the house, which is a close call.
However, the magical runes drawn in the children’s book start swallowing her house right before their eyes……
And it ends up turning her mother to stone.
Anybody can use magic as long as they have the special magical ink and the runes. That has been a secret that the wizards have been hiding. And that has been also the secret to save the world.
The wizard, Qifrey, decides to delete Coco’s memory, where she found the secret of magic (feeling sorry for her).
However, Coco realizes that if she loses her memory about magic, nobody will ever be able to get her mother back to normal…… Coco promises to Qifrey that she will find exactly the same children’s book as hers. She has even memorized what is written there. If she can find the book, then she might be able to find the way of getting her mother back.
The fact that she has found out cannot be deleted. And to keep Coco’s memory in her is…… she has to “hide” the secret too. On that day…… she became a witch, which she has long dreamed of.
What a sad story……
Is Coco able to grow up as a witch and get her mother back to normal? This is one of the most featured series with such a sad storyline and super beautiful illustrations!

Tongari Boushi no Kitchen is a “cooking manga,” drawn in the worldview of Tongari Boushi no Atelier! While cooking, magic is used and some mysterious ingredients are used too…… But the process of cooking the dishes are drawn so detailed and beautifully, just like the original that you will be able to imagine how they actually taste!!
At the end of the book, the recipes, which are used in episodes, are shown too! You see some weird descriptions such as “Spread the magical runes and use the magical fire” or the ingredients which you might or might not hear in reality too. But! Since they’re written in details, you might be able to actually make them even without using magic……?
It’s a sad and beautiful fantasy world, drawn as if it’s from the children’s book. Check out Atelier of Witch Hat (Tongari Boushi no Atelier), rated so highly from the world too!
