The story begins with a fire dragon's egg laid in a forest inhabited by magic beasts. A mother cat gives birth to her kittens on top of that egg and, for some reason, begins raising the egg right along with her own children. Before long, what emerges from the broken shell is, naturally, not a kitten but a dragon. Yet the mother cat does not mind this at all, and the other cats naturally accept it as part of the family. “Because it was raised by a cat, the dragon becomes part of the cat family.” From this bold yet strangely convincing premise, a gentle and quirky story begins to unfold.

The fully grown dragon comes to be called the “Cat Dragon” by humans with a sense of awe. However, its name among the cats in the forest is “Feathered Uncle.” This contrast alone conveys the atmosphere of the work very well. While to outsiders it is a terrifying fire dragon, to the cats it is a reliable family member who has always been by their side. As if returning the favor to the mother cat who showered him with love after he lost his real parents before being born, he now takes on the role of watching over the cats living in the forest. A child who was merely protected becomes a supporting figure for the next generation over a long period of time. This relationship possesses a warmth that goes beyond the simple combination of “a dragon and cute cats,” allowing the theme that family is not determined solely by blood ties to be felt naturally.

And the main characters that must not be forgotten are the free-spirited cats. Each of them living in the forest has a different personality and way of thinking, making it a case of “ten cats, ten colors” rather than “ten people, ten colors.” They act wherever their curiosity leads them, sometimes showing interest in the human world as well. Due to certain circumstances, the Cat Dragon used to dislike humans, but as he watches over the cats who try to interact with humans, he himself gradually comes to understand the existence of human beings. This is personally my favorite part of “Neko to Ryuu.” Rather than suddenly changing his values after being persuaded by someone, the Cat Dragon's world slowly expands through the small connections formed by his beloved cats. That change is drawn without being pushy, moving at a gentle pace fitting for a dragon that lives for long years, which feels wonderfully comfortable.

When thinking of fantasy works, one might imagine battles against powerful enemies or events that shake the world. However, what leaves a strong impression in this work are much more familiar events and encounters. The Cat Dragon and cats, cats and humans, and the Cat Dragon and humans. As these different creatures interact with one another, numerous small stories are born. Having originally been published as a series of short stories, it meshes exceptionally well with a structure that expands its world while bringing focus to various characters and cats. When you finish reading an episode, rather than a flashy sense of exhilaration, something slowly settles deep within your chest. And in the next story, you can view this world from a slightly different angle than before. Such an accumulation forms the unique flavor of “Neko to Ryuu.”

Of course, it is not a story that is solely enjoyable and peaceful throughout. Dragons and cats have completely different lifespans and body sizes. That is precisely why the Cat Dragon's role of “watching over” carries a hint of sadness. Even so, new cats are born, each setting off on their own path, and Feathered Uncle continues to watch over them. It is because of this repetition that the warmth of this work can be felt even more deeply. Having surpassed a cumulative total of 1.4 million copies for the series, gaining extraordinary popularity for a short-story work, and even having an omnibus-style anime adaptation confirmed, “Neko to Ryuu” is a fantasy that leaves behind such a mysterious lingering sensation—you start reading drawn in by the cute premise, only to find yourself reflecting on family, encounters, and partings. It is a work that makes you want to peek into the forest a little longer to see what kind of connections “Feathered Uncle” and the cats will forge next.
