[Summer 2026 Anime] Trending as a Japanese-Style Cinderella Story! The Popular Work “Oni no Hanayome,” Which Was Also Adapted into a Live-Action Movie in 2026!

“Oni no Hanayome” is a Japanese-style fantasy set in a mystical world where humans and ayakashi live together, telling the story of a young girl who overcomes a harsh fate to grab hold of happiness. The story's protagonist, Shinonome Yuzu, is an ordinary high school student who spends her days receiving no affection from her family and feeling as though her very existence is disregarded. Her family's attention is focused solely on her younger sister, Karin, who was chosen as the bride of a nine-tailed fox (youko), and Yuzu is driven into a corner by the overwhelmingly cruel reality of even her boyfriend having his heart stolen by her sister and leaving. Her figure as she desperately endures while harboring the loneliness of not being needed by anyone grips the reader's heart tightly from the very beginning of the story.
Leaving home with a feeling of having lost everything, Yuzu meets Kiryuuin Reiya, the next head of the Kiryuuin clan who holds overwhelming power even among the ayakashi. Despite it being their first meeting, the scene where he straightforwardly tells her, “I wanted to meet you, my bride,” can be called an impressive and iconic scene symbolizing this work. The development where a girl who had never been needed by anyone until then is suddenly welcomed as an irreplaceable presence is classic yet possesses a captivating power, and from this point, Yuzu's life begins to move drastically. In the relationship spun by different beings—an oni and a human—trust and bonds going beyond mere romance are carefully depicted, making you unable to stop turning the pages as you wonder what happens next.
The charm of the work is not limited to romance; it also lies in its unique worldview where ayakashi live as a matter of course. The setting in which beings such as oni and youko naturally interact with human society is extremely interesting, and the distinctly Japanese atmosphere and mystical air are wonderfully harmonized. Within a world possessing both splendor and mystery, the positions and values held by each ayakashi add depth to the story, creating a satisfying read that does not end as a simple romance work. Since it allows one to experience an extraordinary feeling that cannot be tasted in reality, I felt it is content that can fully satisfy people who like fantasy works.
Yuzu is by no means a strong person from the beginning. Precisely because she has lived without confidence in herself after continually receiving unreasonable treatment, the way her heart gradually changes whenever she touches upon small acts of kindness or warm words is portrayed very delicately. Watching over her figure, a feeling of wanting to cheer her on naturally wells up, and one cannot help but wish for her to become happy. Just as much as the painful time was long, the emotion of scenes where hope shines through is even greater, making it a work where you can enjoy the story while empathizing with her.
“Oni no Hanayome” is a classic Cinderella story where an oppressed girl meets her destined partner and finds her own place of belonging, while being packed with plenty of charm unique to Japanese-style fantasy. Although there are scenes where your heart aches over painful developments, it is a work that makes you feel the hope for the future and the importance of bonds with people even more than that. Because elements of romance, fantasy, and emotion are combined in a well-balanced manner, once you start reading, you become curious about the continuation of the story and find yourself reading through it in a spellbound state. The protagonist gradually regaining her smile is extremely memorable, making it a book that leaves a warm, positive feeling in your heart after you finish reading.
