[Summer 2026 Anime] What awaited the girl taken in by her mother-in-law was... a heaven of coddling and doting!? Ibittekonai Gibo to Gishi!

When first seeing the title “Ibittekonai Gibo to Gishi,” many people might imagine a somewhat heavy story depicting “daughter-in-law bullying” or “family conflict.” However, this work brilliantly subverts those preconceptions. Even though it begins with a development reminiscent of the fairy tale “Cinderella,” where the protagonist, who has lost her mother, is taken in by the main branch of a prestigious family and expects a “dreadful stepmother” and “mean stepsisters” to await her, what actually awaited her was a family so kind and full of compassion that it was almost anticlimactic. This gap is the greatest charm of the story, making it a work with a mysterious comfort that naturally brings a smile to your face every time you turn the page.
The setting of the story is an era when foreign culture was gradually beginning to permeate Japan. Raised as an illegitimate child of a prestigious family, the protagonist is welcomed into the main household following her mother's death, exposing her to a lifestyle and values completely different from what she had known. As she struggles in an unfamiliar environment yet honestly absorbs each experience, one cannot help but cheer for her growth into a lady. Surprised by the manners and culture unique to a distinguished family, the sight of her moving forward step by step with the warm support of those around her has enough power to move hearts, even without flashy incidents. Because family bonds and compassion are depicted in a natural way, the work leaves a gentle lingering warmth after reading.
In this work, many unique and quirky characters make an appearance. The stepsisters, who show a haughty attitude but are actually very caring—almost as if they are hiding their embarrassment—are like “tsundere” characters wrapped in even greater kindness. And the stepmother, contrary to her dignified aura, warmly watches over the entire family and sometimes guides the children with bold actions. Looking at the title alone, one might imagine a tense household, but in reality, everyone is so considerate of one another and treats her with such overwhelming kindness that the protagonist herself becomes bewildered. This exquisite misunderstanding and the well-paced banter envelop the entire work, creating a comical atmosphere that will make you burst into laughter again and again.
What I felt while reading this work is that “kindness can be a massive appeal of a story.” It made me realize once again that even without stimulating plot developments or intense conflicts, the sight of people caring for one another is incredibly interesting and captivating. The gap between the title and the content is exquisite; even if you start reading with a laugh, before you know it, you will find yourself falling in love with every single character. It is a work that naturally loosens your cheeks while reading, and leaves you with a warm feeling after finishing, thinking, “How happy it would be to have a family like this.” It is a manga I would highly recommend to many people as a work where laughter and healing are beautifully harmonized, which can be read with peace of mind even on tired days or when feeling a bit down.
