[Torture x Comedy!?] A black but chuckle-inducing surreal comedy set in a world where torture is legalized! Goumon Baito-kun no Nichijou!

2026-02-18
If you are looking for something a bit unusual, “Goumon Baito-kun no Nichijou” is a must-check. You might instinctively brace yourself just by looking at the title, but this work features a “gentle world” that far exceeds your imagination. Despite the dystopian setting where killing and torture are legalized, the characters go about their daily work harmoniously like students. It is a workplace comedy that wraps a dark theme in a comical and lighthearted way. First, please take your time to savor the charm of this slightly dark and mysterious workplace.
The story is set at “Spiritus Inc.,” a torture contracting company. However, they have a strict policy of targeting “only bad people” and are known as the only “white company” (fair employer) in the industry. Working here are four individuals with a good balance of personality and skill: Sero, an ace-level expert who is very friendly; Siu, a legend in the industry; and Mike and Hugh, the fresh new part-timers. Their banter is lighthearted, and a pleasant atmosphere flows between them, much like club teammates. Despite dealing with the extreme subject of torture, the reason it feels strangely healing might be thanks to this “homelike” atmosphere.
While there are scenes where torture techniques and expertise are briefly introduced, the true essence of this work lies in the interaction and relationships between the characters. Cool retorts, slightly airheaded gags, warm friendships, and casual support...... all of it feels natural and heartwarming to read. In particular, Mike's cuteness and Hugh's serious, hard-working nature will surely capture the hearts of many readers. Additionally, the story focuses almost exclusively on the main characters with no background characters appearing, and the lack of extra “noise” contributes to the comfortable reading experience.
It would be a waste to shy away just because of the word “torture”! This work stands apart from so-called gore or gloomy developments. Actual torture scenes are restrained; instead, the well-paced conversations and humorous little tidbits are what will leave an impression. The structure, which allows you to finish reading with a smile, could be described as closer to a “healing workplace manga” than a dark comedy. It is a perfect book for those who want to enjoy a slightly unusual slice-of-life story without being bound by genre.
For those who are tired of ordinary part-time job manga, or those who want a bit of stimulation but dislike gore...... “Goumon Baito-kun no Nichijou” is just right. It depicts a slightly unusual occupation, yet the theme of “working” is firmly portrayed, allowing you to laugh with empathy and feel slightly healed. That exquisite sense of balance is the greatest charm of this work. You might feel some hesitation at first, but before you know it, you'll be completely immersed in the world of these lovable characters.
