[Ranma 1/2] Created many of the ”standards” in modern manga!
The monumental achievement of love comedy: Ranma 1/2!

What would you do if your gender changed the moment you were splashed with water? Rumiko Takahashi-sensei’s representative work, ”Ranma 1/2,” is a story that took such a wild idea and turned it into a serious narrative. Serialized from 1987 to 1996, this manga possesses a rare balance where martial arts, romance, and comedy are all mixed together, yet somehow feel perfectly consistent. The main axis of the story is the complex relationship between Ranma Saotome—a boy who acquired a constitution that turns him into a girl when splashed with water at a mysterious spring in China called Jusenkyo—and his fiancée, Akane Tendo. With the addition of the intense personalities of their families and friends, a human drama unfolds that goes beyond mere slapstick.
The story opens with the father, Genma Saotome, heading out on a journey with the newborn Ranma, determined to ”raise him to be a man.” Their destination was Jusenkyo in China. At this location with numerous legendary springs, the father and son get caught up in an unbelievable situation. Genma gains the strange constitution of turning into a panda, while Ranma turns into a girl. Furthermore, it is a very complicated setting where they transform with cold water and return to normal with hot water. Just how much this complicates daily life is vividly depicted through their hardships and the absurdity as the story progresses.
After returning to Japan, Genma takes refuge at the Tendo household, home to old acquaintances. Living there are three sisters who lost their mother at a young age and their father, Soun. Following a good old-fashioned (?) promise made by the fathers to ”marry off their children if they were of the opposite sex,” Ranma is made the fiancé of the third daughter, Akane. However, Akane is a die-hard man-hater. And Ranma also reacts defensively toward Akane, who turned cold the moment she saw his female form. Starting a relationship full of nothing but fights rather than romance, will the day ever come when these two truly unite......? Their journey captures the hearts of readers and won’t let go.
The fun of ”Ranma 1/2” lies not only in its love-comedy elements but also in its solid appeal as a martial arts manga. At Furinkan High School, where Ranma attends, a cast of eccentric rivals appears, causing trouble every time. However, a characteristic of Rumiko Takahashi’s work is that there is always a sense of humanity within them. They seem to be joking but are actually serious; they are noisy yet somehow poignant—such emotional fluctuations are exquisitely portrayed. Above all, the pacing is so good that readers can’t help but feel excited about what will happen next.
