【Space × Home Appliances】 An alien comes to Earth to reclaim lost technology in this space comedy! Uchuujin MuuMuu is now being published!

2025-09-26
Uchuujin MuuMuu exudes a strange pull from its very title, but as you read on, that “strangeness” transforms into charm, making it a brilliant gag sci-fi comic. The story begins when MuuMuu, a cat-shaped alien from outer space, suddenly crashes into an apartment in Machida, Tokyo. MuuMuu’s goal is to reclaim the lost technology of his home planet. To do so, he focuses on “home appliances,” the very symbols of human civilization, and forcefully intrudes into the life of resident college student Umeyashiki Sakurako, starting a bizarre boarding life with her. From that moment, Machida’s quiet daily life is turned upside down, as antics and chaos surrounding home appliances erupt one after another.
What makes this manga unique is that the encounter with an alien doesn’t lead to epic crises or adventures, but instead puts everyday “home appliances” at the very center of the story. Through seemingly ordinary appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and microwaves, the relationship between MuuMuu, Sakurako, and those around them deepens. Each time an appliance triggers chaos, human emotions and ways of living come to light, portrayed with impeccable humor—the greatest charm of this work. The mismatched duo of the simple Sakurako from the countryside and the cat-shaped alien MuuMuu weave a heartwarming mix of the ordinary and extraordinary against the backdrop of urban college life.
And one of the most striking characters in this story is the one known as “Buchou” (the Club President). At first glance, he doesn’t even look like a college student—he has the appearance and energy of an old-school Showa-era electronics shop owner. When he starts talking about appliances, the manga’s tone shifts dramatically, with such intensity that even readers can’t help but become fascinated with home electronics. In fact, it’s often Buchou’s presence and lines that linger in the mind more than the alien or the college girl—perhaps because Miyashita Hiroki-sensei himself enjoys drawing this character the most. His depiction is incredibly detailed and dynamic, leaving a lasting impression on the reader.
Uchuujin MuuMuu is sci-fi, yet laughter takes center stage rather than tension—and within that, a touch of bittersweetness and warmth coexists, creating a uniquely strange aftertaste. The quirky characters clash with their eccentric values and obsessions, yet the story progresses with a strangely pleasant balance. Centering on the familiar and slightly nostalgic theme of home appliances, the way cosmic-scale elements are seamlessly blended into Machida’s everyday life is quintessentially Miyashita’s style. To portray such a bizarre premise—a cat-shaped alien obsessed with appliances—so naturally, and in a way that’s both funny and moving, is proof of true talent. Surreal, unique, yet strangely lovable—this is a book highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience that peculiar feeling.
