So! Here’s why I really want to share ‘Haikyu!!’ as one of my best recommended Physical Manga!
That’s the illustrations on the facing pages are so big and clear and what’s more? The scenes drawn on those pages are Super HOT!!! Of course, you can see the facing pages in Digital Manga too but the ones in Physical Manga look more powerful as if they were directly coming right to us!
So today! I’ll pick out FIVE scenes from the facing pages, which I felt Super HOT and share them with you so you can feel how they attract you as a Physical Manga!

Episode 39
“Revival”
Vol.5

This scene is the official match, which the main character, Hinata Shoyo, and his partner, Kageyama Tobio, participated in as the members of Karasuno High School volleyball club for the first time.
When they were junior high school students, they have played volleyball together only once. And even in that game, Hinata was just overwhelmed by Kageyama’s super high skills of volleyball.
Everyone admitted Kageyama as a genius setter in his junior high school day, which separated him from other players and he couldn’t even play volleyball as he wanted.
Those two both somehow joined the volleyball club of Karasuno High School, which people made fun of, saying “Flightless Ravens, Fallen Crows.”
For the main character, Hinata, Kageyama used to be the strongest enemy but in time, he has become the best buddy and partner for him. So has Hinata, for Kageyama. Then these two, belonging to the volleyball club at Karasuno High School, started off another chapter from there under the nickname the “Fallen Crows.”
The crow that is drawn in the scene where Hinata is, is very impressive and symbolic! I’m deeply touched by that……!

Episode 163
“The Halo Around the Moon”
Vol.19

This is one of the scenes when they had the final of the preliminary match of the spring high school volleyball competition. That day, Karasuno High School was competing against Shiratorizawa Academy.
Hinata and Kageyama, who joined the club at the same time, were surprised to see the 10th grader, Tsukishima Kei, who kept having a cold attitude, finally managed to block Ushiwaka’s spike, which nobody had done before. Of course, Tsukishima lost his cool in that moment. This was a very impressive scene.
While Hinata and Kageyama were improving their skills after they lost the match, Tsukishima kept his cool attitude as usual. However, someone changed the attitude when they had a summer training camp in Tokyo.
Tsukishima said, “We can never win. There is always a loser, then what makes you guys want to move on!?” Then his childhood friend, Yamaguchi, appealed to him, “What do you want other than pride?”
Then Bokuto, from Fukurodani Academy, said, “Maybe you’re not good enough…… that’s why you can’t enjoy volleyball.” “The time will come when you can bring out your full potential and finally get addict to it.”
And this will be the core for Tsukishima to move forward, playing volleyball from then on.
And for Tsukishima, the weapon called “pride”, will become “a block where he makes use of his height and calmness.” It’s the weapon that only Tsukishima owns, not Hinata. And when the weapon blocked Ushiwaka’s spike, which had been “almost impossible”, it became the moment when Tsukishima “got addicted to the volleyball.”
Look at this victory pose by Tsukishima who’s usually calm and centered! This resonated with me especially because I knew what has been happening to him…… By the way, this scene is a very significant one that will influence the next storyline……!

Episode 188
“The Battle of Concepts”
Vol.21

This is one of the scenes when they had the final of the preliminary match of the spring high school volleyball competition, where Karasuno High School and Shiratorizawa Academy were competing.
They were having a very close match. Shiratorizawa Academy plays under the concept “beating them with an overwhelming power, led by the key role, Ushiwaka.” On the contrary, Karasuno High School plays under the concept “attacking them from any possible position, focusing on getting points by attacking them as many as possible.” Both are the attack-style teams but the concepts are quite opposite. That’s why they have to win to show that their concept is superior.
Even in the last set, they kept deuce and 12 players of both teams started lacking concentration and stamina. But they could never lose because of their strong will and pride.
Washijō Tanji, a coach of Shiratorizawa Academy, used to be a very skilled volleyball player too but never had enough chance being a player in the match because he was short. That’s why he yearned for a simple power that can beat everything. And Hinata Shoyo is about the same height as the coach and now is the center of the team, with various attack strategies in Karasuno. These two characters face each other, which clearly shows the title, “the battle of concepts” as well. Impressive.
This scene will be a very important element later on, just like the previous scene of Tsukishima.
Most of the matches in ‘Haikyu!!’ show the illustrations that are ‘moving’ such as saturated linework and fonts, while this scene shows ‘silence’, which is also impressive. Especially for this final match, there were a lot of strenuous movements, which is one of the reasons too. Along with this scene, I really want you to read this Shiratorizawa battle in all episodes with the paper-version manga!!
So! How were all these impressive facing pages by the players at Karasuno High School? But you know what? We have to focus on two assistants who are also on the facing pages! Let’s have a look at them!

Episode 76
“Creator”
Vol.9

First, let’s have a look at this scene. It’s a horizontal and a little hard to see? Let’s make this Physical Manga vertical……
Guess what? One whole poster is drawn! This is one of the famous scenes where Yachi Hitoka newly joined the Karasuno High School volleyball club right before the summer break began.
Yachi had never started anything new and never been in the center of anything happening around her. The reason why she joined the volleyball club temporarily as an assistant was because Shimizu (the 12th grader), who was then an assistant of the volleyball club, was so pretty that Yachi could do nothing but said “yes”, when Shimizu told her about joining the club. However, after she officially joined it, she ended up changing herself, being influenced by other positive members such as Hinata.
Yachi, always avoiding being in the center, had something she could do. It was to make the poster so they could do a fund-raising activity for the club to go to the training camp in Tokyo. Her mother owning the design company, also helped her make it happen, stepping forward to change herself.
This facing page only shows the poster that Yachi made and never shows herself. However, Yachi, who used to be negative on everything, did step forward, influenced by Hinata. And she ended up making such a poster……! It’s not just a poster, huh……? Another thing is that if we turn this page to vertical, it would look even more real! It’s interesting!

Episode 232
“Sensen”
Vol.26

Alright, here’s another assistant, Shimizu Kiyoko. This scene depicts Shimizu’s true feeling and past.
In her junior high school days, she belonged to the track and field club and actually did very good as a hurdler. However, she fell down at the last competition, with her foot stuck to the hurdle. She quit the club from then on. Then she got terrified with her experience where no efforts was paid off after all. That’s why she didn’t join the track and field club when he became a high school student, but instead, she joined the volleyball club as an assistant, being solicited.
At first, she was comfortable being an assistant because she wasn’t competing anymore but she could keep herself busy. However, as time went by, she has felt a bond with the teammates. What can I do for them as an assistant? Maybe I can do something even outside of the court. What she has decided to do was to do everything she could as an assistant and also take over all the work and her will to the one who’s going to be the new assistant. Then she solicited 10th graders before the summer break began and spent time with other teammates as a club. Before she noticed, she was fighting as an assistant as well, influenced by her teammates who always tried competing against the teams that were more skillful than they were.
Everything she did for the hurdle was gone quickly. When she first became an assistant, she was scared of that fact. But now, she never feels terrified by anything because what moves her is just excitement where we can just go on.
I’ve seen Simizu being ‘pretty……’ so many times but this beauty can be seen only in this facing page! So everybody! Get moved with a Physical Manga!!
