What Is Shaman King?

It’s a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Takei Hiroyuki-Sensei, serialized from July 1998 to August 2004 in Shonen Jump. It concluded with 300 episodes, 32 volumes.

In 2008, complete-version comics of Shaman King released. Since the final episode, which was created in 2004, was cancelled, the ending, which the author wanted to write, is being depicted in this complete version. (It’s all newly-illustrated with 380 pages.) The complete version has 27 volumes in total.

After that, spin-off series, depicting various chara’s past, have released until now. The “concluded version” (35 volumes in total), where more new illustrations were added, also released, and the anime series, which will air from April, is scheduled be produced based on this concluded version.

So…… if we want to prepare for the anime, starting to air from April, through comics, which one should we read, the completed version or the concluded version?
(From the left side, a regular version, a complete version and a concluded version [Volume1])
Alright. I would say you should prepare for it through the concluded version (35 volumes in total)!
What’s the difference between the regular, complete and concluded versions……?
  • Regular Version
    • the story ends with 32 volumes.
  • Complete Version
    • the story is completed, with 27 volumes, showing the different ending from the regular version.
  • Concluded Version
    • the complete version with newly-illustrated parts added. The content and ending are the same as the complete version. 35 volumes in total.
    • It’s being comicalized since June 2020 after they announced it as eBooks.
Yep. So for the anime adaptation, the director announced that ‘he will make the original a concluded version.’ So! If possible, try to read the concluded version with 29 volumes in total, releasing so far!
Since the concluded version has been issued in a fast pace, 35 volumes will have released while the anime is airing, huh? For those who want to know everything about the story as soon as possible, try the complete version with 27 volumes, whose content and ending are the same as the concluded version!

Outline of Shaman King!

“Shaman” is……
able to interact with a medium between the worlds of the living and the dead, a fairy residing in the land or the forest and a spirit freely and has the superhuman power.
A middle school student, Oyamada Manta is such in a hurry.
He studies at the cram school until late at night and tries to catch the last train of the day……
He is going to take a shortcut way to go to the station. He now has to go across the cemetery at midnight……
Then a boy on the hill, looking up at the moon, talks to him.
“Look, the moon is beautiful tonight. Let’s just enjoy watching it with us instead of being in such a hurry.”
(With us……?) Manta wonders. It’s in the cemetery at midnight. He clearly sees Manta and that boy alone. As Manta thinks it so weird, the boy shows him something, pointing that out.
“Let’s enjoy watching the moon with ‘these guys’ in the cemetery!”
That day is the first time Manga sees the ghosts…… Then he shouts.
Manta runs away from the cemetry, rushing so hard. Next day, Manga tells his classmates that he saw the ghost on the previous night. However, nobody believes it and they just laugh at him, instead. Manta cannot understand it…… Meanwhile, his homeroom teacher introduces a student who transfers to his class.
Guess what? The boy is the one who he saw at the cemetery on previous night! Manta tells everybody that he is the one who was with all the ghosts but……
“There is no such thing as a ghost, I mean who are you, anyhow?”
The boy says so, treating Manta coldly.
He tells Manta that he is a liar and Manta must have seen someone else. Manta still cannot understand…… Manta now follows the boy to find out his true color…… however, Manta gets caught by the boy and ends up talking with him.
The name of that boy is Asakura Yoh.
He finds out that Yoh is Shaman who is able to see the ghosts and he came to the world to train himself.
Then Yoh apologizes to Manta for having pretended that he didn’t know anything about the ghosts at school earlier in case he would get trouble, even though Yoh is actually able to see the ghosts.
Manta, who didn’t know anything about Shaman, finds out that Shaman is being recognized worldwide. We can even look it up in the dictionary too. However, (even though Manga actually saw the ghosts) Manta feels something fishy about the existence of Shaman. Manta thinks he might be able to believe the existence if he can see them again. Now, he heads for that cemetery again……
Guess what? What he sees there is the delinquents who are well-known in town.
They are destroying the cemetery, breaking all the stone monument for the dead.
Unfortunately, Manta gets caught by the delinquents.
What’s worse, they think that “he is the one who often comes to that cemetery recently” ……
Manta gets roughed up by them.
He is even laughed at by the classmates, saying why he went to the cemetery in the first place. He starts to regret about what he did…… when Yoh cuts in.
Yoh says “I heard everything that happened there from ‘the guys at the cemetery’. Let’s go revenge on them.” Yoh and Manta leaves the classroom.
Manta doesn’t even know why Yoh and him have to go there to revenge, plus, Manta knows that the delinquents have weapons too. Manta insists to Yoh that they shouldn’t be able to beat them……
Yoh smiles and says, “We’ll be fine. We have a strong ally with us (obsessed in us).”
And now, they are with the delinquents.
The delinquents threaten Yoh, saying, “You guys want to be killed and go to hell?”
Yoh refutes, saying, “The guys that are in THAT hell are saying that you guys are ‘so annoying,’ destroying their cemetery.”
The delinquents start to attack him.
However, like Yoh says, Yoh and Manta have a strong “ally” with them.
It is the samurai’s ghost called Amidamaru, who has been buried and insulted by the delinquents who destroyed the cemetery……!
Wow~ it’s been quite a while…… 1998, huh? I don’t feel that it’s that way back. I would check Jump until the last episode back then……
Since it’s one of the most popular series among all the Jump series so for those who have never heard of it, check it out from the anime starting to air in April!
