It’s been serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday since 2020, written by Yamada Kanehito-Sensei and illustrated by Abe Tsukasa-Sensei. As for the comics, volume1 has just been released in August, but it’s already going viral with its unique worldview, theme and drama by the characters. So many fans have also been waiting for this series to be “made into anime” as well.

The story begins with the scene, where the hero’s party that defeated the demon king, return with glory to the royal capital. A brave heart says to an elf, Frieren.

We have to find the job as soon as we get home.

Just because we defeated the demon king doesn’t mean everything is done. The life after this is overwhelmingly longer than that.

Especially Frieren, an elf, is able to live longer than other human members. However, Frieren is not really serious about that yet.

The hero party, who defeated the demon king, requiring over 10 years, is warmly welcomed by the king of the royal capital.

A brave heart, a warrior, a monk and a magician……

The king has decided to make those four’s statues, honoring their achievement. The four realize that they have really defeated the demon king. Each member looks back on their past 10 years during the feast. On the very date, where they left for the journey, the brave heart did something rude to the king and almost got executed. The monk was once useless having hangover……

The four members look back on such old days……

To Frieren, the ten years with her members was “short.”

And during the feast, they see the meteor shower, which is said to be seen only once in fifty years. It’s as if they are celebrating their peaceful world ahead after they have defeated the demon king. Frieren suggests that they should go to a quieter place 50 years later only with four members alone, because it’s too bright with lots of light in town even though the meteor shower is beautiful.

The brave heart smiles a little and nods.

Yes, let’s do that fifty years from now with us alone.

Then they leave each other, trying to seek for what each of them wants to do for living.

An elf, Frieren, goes on a trip to various places to learn magic more.

One day during the journey, Frieren realizes that the brave heart has kept her stuff. Frieren decides to visit the royal capital, where they had a farewell.

Plus, there will be the “meteor shower” again.

And guess what…… The brave heart that she meets at the royal capital is……

Such an old man. The brave heart, who is a human, has turns into such an old man.

The stuff she has received from him looks well-stored.

Frieren actually asked him to store it just “casually,” but he has stored it so nicely.

Frieren is staring at her statue, displayed in town.

Nothing has changed.

An elf, Frieren, looks exactly the same as her 50 years ago.

And as they have promised, the four get together once again at the royal capital.

……To see the meteor shower.

The brave heart looks back on the past.

They would walk together like this 50 years ago.

It’s such an old and nostalgic memory and still a beautifully shining memory in them. These four have been always together in the memory and they all have been waiting for that day, when they all can walk together again……

The meteor shower is amazingly beautiful even 50 years later.

And……

The brave heart passes away.

……so peacufully.

People at the royal capital all mourn him and hold a big funeral.

During the funeral, someone says, looking at Frieren:

They don’t mean to cover up for her but both the monk and the worrier say, “We don’t look sad, either, do we?”

The monk is scolded; “Do it more seriously,” since he’s naturally been ‘not’ serious. But then, Frieren says;

Yes, Frieren knows.

Humans have a ‘shorter’ life than her, an elf.

The ‘ten years’ for her is different from the ones for humans.

However, she knows it…… just as a ‘knowledge.’

The three do a farewell again after the funeral.

The monk says that he wants to take a last look at their faces since they won’t get together again like that.

Frieren asks:

The monk replies. We’re the heroes that saved the world so I’m sure we’ll have such a luxurious life in heaven. That’s why I fought with you guys, never giving up.

Then he did a farewell, riding on the horse.

Now the two are left alone.

Frieren tells the worrier that her next journey will be the one to ‘know more about humans,’ not just to learn magic. Then she asks him to come with her…… but he turns it down.

He says he’s no longer young enough to fight with the ax.

Frieren looks surprised.

The arms of the worrier, hidden under the clothe, do look thin and weak now.
