[Webtoon Manga] A heart as cold as ice. A youth school manga where it melts bit by bit, making you want to watch over them precisely because they are so socially awkward! Koori no Jouheki!

Koori no Jouheki is a work that carefully depicts the inner lives of high school students who are socially awkward, and the presence of the protagonist, Koyuki Hikawa, in particular, brings a quiet tension to the entire story. Because Koyuki has a personality where she cannot grasp the proper distance from others and builds walls around herself, she has become isolated in her class to the point of being called the “Queen”; however, behind that attitude, it is not mere coldness that is visible, but a fear of interacting with people and emotional scars from past experiences, leading readers to naturally wonder “how does she really feel? with every one of her words and actions.
Appearing before such a Koyuki is Minato Amamiya, a presence who seems to have no concept of personal distance. He is a person who remains undaunted by Koyuki's rejection or blunt attitude, continuing to interact with her in a natural way as if he doesn't even mind it; while his “pushiness” can sometimes seem insensitive, it is strangely not offensive and instead plays the role of gradually cracking Koyuki's closed-off heart. The relationship between these two does not show clear progress like a typical romance, but changes gradually through subtle depictions such as the pauses in conversation, silences, and small changes in their gaze, which is why readers are deeply moved by that “slight step forward.”
The story does not end with just Koyuki and Minato; by adding characters like Miki Azumi, a childhood friend and class favorite, and Youta Hino, who has had a relationship with Miki and Minato since middle school, a more complex and deep human connection is depicted. While Miki is a bright person liked by everyone, she has a side that seems to be pushing herself too hard, and Youta hides his own inner conflicts behind a calm and kind personality. As the troubles and pasts held by each of these four, as well as their feelings for one another, intersect, a drama unfolds that is not just a simple youth ensemble piece, but one that is highly realistic and deeply relatable.
The first feeling one gets upon reading “Koori no Jouheki” is “why is this so frustratingly slow?”, but that is exactly what can be called the greatest charm of this work. The characters are by no means socially adept; they harbor imperfections just like real-life human relationships, such as being unable to honestly convey what they are thinking or misunderstanding the other person's feelings. However, it is precisely because of that awkwardness that the courage to take a step forward and the attitude of trying to stay by someone's side stand out, leaving a strong impression on the reader's heart. Although there are few flashy developments or dramatic staging, this work quietly but surely shakes the heart, and I felt it is a very high-quality youth manga that makes one reconsider the “difficulty and preciousness of facing other people.”
