The story begins with a casual act where an ordinary high school student, Fujimiya Amane, offers his umbrella to Shiina Mahiru, known as the ”Angel,” as she stands in the rain; that momentary act of kindness changes his life from the ground up. Mahiru, who appears before Amane when he catches a cold, is not just a beautiful girl; behind her overly perfect appearance, she possesses a realistic and somewhat sharp side, and that gap makes her feel very human. What is depicted here is not the simple formula of ”you helped me, so I like you,” but rather Mahiru’s ”kindness with distance” as she reaches out to Amane, whose life is in disarray, while still being exasperated by him, and this exquisite relationship instantly elevates the story’s charm.

The true value of this work lies not in dramatic incidents or flashy developments, but in the changes in their relationship that accumulate little by little within daily life. As Mahiru cleans Amane’s room, prepares meals, and spends time together, the distance between the two naturally shrinks, and since that process is drawn very carefully, readers can experience a sense of immersion as if they were in that space themselves. Especially impressive is the moment when Mahiru begins to face Amane not as an ”Angel” but as an individual girl, and in that, glimpses of her true emotions, away from her ideal image, can be seen. On the other hand, Amane also maintains his attitude of caring for Mahiru while pretending to be indifferent, and they face each other sincerely, albeit clumsily. This ”frustration” is the greatest appeal of this work, and the delicate psychological description in the early stages of love strongly draws the reader’s empathy.

As the story progresses, the two, who officially started dating after the sports festival in their second year of high school, end up living a peaceful daily life like newlyweds, but even then, the story never stops at just sweetness. While romantic events such as home-cooked meals and yukata dates are depicted, the development where they gradually face each other’s pasts and emotional wounds has a depth that goes beyond the framework of a mere romantic comedy. In particular, the description of how past experiences influence current actions and emotions is realistic, quietly showing that there are problems that cannot be solved by the feeling of ”like” alone. Nevertheless, the sight of the two trying to walk together is very warm, providing healing as well as positive emotions to the reader.

What I strongly feel after finishing reading this work is the extent to which ”kindness” has the power to change people. Mahiru’s actions, which could be called meddlesome, could turn into over-interference if one were to take a wrong step, but within the relationship with Amane, it is naturally accepted, and rather, it is established as a comfortable sense of distance. Also, since Amane is not just a person to be pampered, but grows as a person who stays close to Mahiru’s heart, their relationship is by no means one-way. This balance brings a sense of security and persuasiveness to the entire work. Although it is not flashy, it is a work that I can definitely recommend to those who are looking for a story that slowly soaks into the heart.
