[Elf x Modern Comedy] The elves whose forest was once burned...... have blended into modern society far too well!
#Kanagawa ni Sunderu Elf!

”An elf living in Kanagawa”—a setting that seems fantastic at first glance yet carries a strange sense of reality. ”#Kanagawa ni Sunderu Elf” is a modern fantasy comedy that starts with such a unique idea. Elves whose forest was once burned down have, for some reason, migrated to Kanagawa Prefecture. What’s more, they aren't hiding in the shadows; they live their lives as if they’ve naturally gained citizenship. The story is set in various cities within the prefecture, such as Yokohama, Kawasaki, Sagamihara, and Chigasaki. Readers watch over them as they spend their days as ”Kanagawa residents,” accompanied by episodes unique to the local area.
At the heart of the story are Yokohama Elf and Kawasaki Human, who for some reason can’t leave the elf alone. The relationship between these two supports both the comedic elements and the warmth of this work. The banter between Kawasaki Human, raised in a place where urban bustle and human kindness mix, and Yokohama Elf, a member of a race that lives for eternity, not only makes you chuckle but also occasionally makes you think about the ”passage of time” and ”differences in values.” This gap adds depth to the manga's flavor.
The greatest charm of this work is that the combination of ”Kanagawa inside jokes” and ”elves” fits better than expected. For example, getting lost in Yokohama Station—famous for construction that never ends—awakening to fashion in Minato Mirai, or even engaging in a turf war (?) with orcs from Machida, Tokyo; it’s full of depictions that locals will find themselves nodding along to. By seeing things through Yokohama Elf's eyes, the humor and charm of the city that we usually overlook come to light.
While it looks like a pure gag manga, ”#Kanagawa ni Sunderu Elf” holds deep themes beneath the surface. For instance, how to coexist with beings who have different cultures and values. Or, what kind of security and pride a ”hometown” provides to a person. Even though the elves are outsiders, they are deeply rooted in the land and sometimes understand Kanagawa even better than humans do. Their presence quietly makes us reflect on our ”relationship with the local community.”
”#Kanagawa ni Sunderu Elf” is the kind of work where you laugh, feel a bit sentimental, and then laugh again. It’s a series that not only appeals to those living in Kanagawa but also piques the interest of those elsewhere, making them think, ”So that’s what this place is like.” It’s a book that allows you to deepen your understanding of real Japanese society and regional culture through the fictional existence of elves.
Why don't you try making your daily life a little more enjoyable along with the elves living in Kanagawa?
