【Summer Anime】 The popular light novel finally receives an anime adaptation and manga serialization! A tale of “oni” that begins in the Edo period and is passed down to the present day — Kijin Gentousha!

“Kijin Gentousha” is a Japanese-style fantasy set in the mountain village of Kadono during the Edo period, depicting the extraordinary life of a boy named Jinta who becomes entangled in a mysterious fate. After running away from home with his young sister, he begins a new life thanks to a chance rescue. Yet these peaceful days cannot last forever, as the existence of the oni quietly casts its shadow over the story. In Kadono, there is an indigenous faith called “Itsukihime,” upheld by shrine maidens, and Jinta takes on the role of protecting them. The “oni” he encounters are not mere apparitions but beings with the ability to foresee the future, carrying deep significance. Jinta’s journey—from Edo to Meiji, Taisho, Showa, and even Heisei—is an epic that goes beyond simple revenge or justice, delving into the very essence of eras and life itself.
A major turning point in the story comes when Jinta, having supposedly slain an oni, ends up absorbing its power and begins walking the path of an oni himself. To make matters worse, during his absence, an oni attacks the village, killing Shirayuki—the person dearest to him. The revelation that this oni is, in fact, his own sister Suzune delivers a profound shock to the reader. Having lost her human memories and been consumed by the power of an oni, Suzune now stands against him. Jinta, taking the name “Jinya,” embarks on a battle across time to stop her. The fate of these two siblings, forced to face each other as oni, is both tragic and intense, shaking the hearts of those who read it.
One of the charms of this work lies in its meticulously crafted and beautiful worldbuilding. The mountain villages of Edo, the dim light of the forest, the momentary stillness before a sword is drawn—every detail is rendered with care, immersing the reader as if turning the pages of an illustrated scroll. The “weight of time” that permeates the story is not that of a simple period drama; it connects with the inner lives of the characters, posing profound questions about life and destiny. The reason Jinya wields his sword is not a simple matter of “justice.” It is a journey in search of the meaning of life, and also a prayer to save himself.
“Kijin Gentousha” contains no flashy action or excessive spectacle. Yet for that very reason, each emotional shift is portrayed with care, leaving a quiet aftertaste in the depths of the heart after reading. The nature of Kadono, Shirayuki’s purity, and the weight of the oni’s presence—together these elements evoke even philosophical themes such as “What does it mean to be human?” and “What is memory?” When you realize that the book you casually picked up contains such a profound story, you too will surely find yourself captivated by this work.
A story that lingers quietly yet powerfully in the heart—“Kijin Gentousha” is exactly such a work. This autumn, why not journey into a Japanese fantasy world that will move your soul?
